S17 Crash Near Garbów Causes Injuries and 5km Jam

An S17 crash near Garbów injured two people and blocked a lane, creating a five-kilometre jam. Police are investigating the causes.

An S17 crash near Garbów on Sunday afternoon left several people hurt and created a long traffic backlog. Consequently, emergency crews sealed a lane and motorists faced a five-kilometre queue.

S17 crash near Garbów: what happened

The collision occurred on Sunday, 14 June, at about 16:35. Moreover, two passenger cars collided on the carriageway heading toward Lublin. One vehicle left the roadway and stopped in a roadside ditch. In addition, firefighters, medical rescue teams and the police attended the scene. Emergency services initially reported four people involved. However, later updates confirmed two people required medical treatment.

Emergency response and traffic impact

Traffic police have started establishing the detailed circumstances. Therefore, investigators will examine speed, distance between vehicles and driver behaviour. Consequently, officers blocked one traffic lane. As a result, traffic stretched back for around five kilometres. Moreover, the jam affected drivers in both directions at times, because many slowed to look.

Why this matters for drivers and expats

Road S17 connects Lublin with Warsaw and carries heavy traffic. Therefore, accidents there cause wide disruption. Consequently, commuters and freight vehicles face delays. Moreover, the route forms part of regional supply chains and holiday travel routes. In addition, summer months often bring higher speeds and denser traffic. Therefore, small mistakes can create severe consequences.

For expats, understanding local procedures matters. Firstly, call 112 for emergencies. Secondly, the ambulance takes you to hospital for urgent care, and public coverage usually applies under the NFZ (National Health Fund). However, non-EU visitors without travel insurance may face bills. In addition, EU citizens should carry a European Health Insurance Card to ease hospital access. Also, keep your vehicle documents and a valid driving licence. If police issue a mandat (fine), you must address it promptly. Finally, if you plan long-term stays, apply for PESEL to ease interactions with local institutions (PESEL is the national ID number). ZUS (the social security body) and NFZ may matter only if you work or live permanently.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you are involved in a crash, document the scene with photos. Then exchange insurance details and contact numbers. Moreover, note the officers’ badge numbers and the incident report reference. In addition, contact your insurer quickly. EU citizens should present an EHIC. Non-EU nationals must have proof of private travel or health insurance. Finally, keep in mind that a mandat is the usual way police fine drivers for traffic offences.

Police continue their on-scene work and will publish further updates. Meanwhile, road users should plan alternative routes. Therefore, expect continued delays on the Lublin–Warsaw corridor for the rest of the day. Also, local authorities may clear the site once investigators finish.
