New 272 km VeloWieprz bike route in Lublin region
Local authorities plan a 272 km bike route called VeloWieprz, linking Green Velo and the Vistula trail.
The Lublin regional government unveiled plans for a new long-distance cycling route called VeloWieprz that will run 272 km along the Wieprz River. The project aims to link the Green Velo trail in the east with the Vistula cycle route in the west.
New route along the Wieprz
Local officials created a dedicated team to design the trail. Consequently, planners set the route from the Wieprz springs at Wieprzów Tarnawacki to the river mouth by Dęblin. The plan runs through 27 municipalities. For example, it crosses Tarnawatka, Krasnobród, Krasnystaw, Łęczna, Lubartów, Ryki, Dęblin and Puławy. Moreover, the team chose low-traffic local roads whenever possible. Therefore, the designers aimed the route at families, children and older cyclists. However, some hills remain in Tarnogóra, Latyczów, Krasnystaw and Łęczna where they could not avoid elevation.
Why this matters for visitors
The Wieprz valley already attracts kayakers and nature lovers. In addition, cyclists will discover Roztocze National Park and several landscape parks. These include Nadwieprzański, Szczebrzeszyński and Krasnobrodzki parks. Consequently, the new route will boost the Lublin region’s tourist appeal. Local officials say VeloWieprz will improve sustainable tourism and widen access. Moreover, they expect economic benefits for small towns along the way.
VeloWieprz route and logistics
Planners completed the concept and gathered necessary opinions and agreements. However, they cannot mark the entire trail this year. Some sections run on damaged or unsealed roads. Therefore, those parts need repairs before permanent signage. Between Lubartów and Dęblin officials cleared the path for marking right away. The team estimated signage alone will cost more than 2 million zł. In addition, they propose installing cyclist service points. These will include shelters, bike racks, picnic tables, bins and repair stations. Planners also suggested linking them to local kayak rental spots. That setup would let riders swap bikes for a short river trip.
Officials stress that VeloWieprz will increase the region’s competitiveness as a bike destination. Moreover, they expect the route to attract both domestic and international cyclists. The plan already lists towns that will gain visitor services. However, the full financial estimate for building the route remains unavailable.
Planners will continue work with municipalities to upgrade road surfaces. Consequently, they will mark more sections once upgrades finish. In addition, local businesses may prepare services for touring cyclists in response to the new route.
