Unusual Puławska hit-and-run injures pregnant driver

Two men fled on foot after a collision on Puławska. The Puławska hit-and-run left a pregnant woman injured and under hospital care.

On Thursday, June 25 around 12:20 two Toyota cars collided at Madalińskiego and Puławska in Warsaw. The Puławska hit-and-run involved two men who walked away from the scene despite being occupants, and a pregnant driver required hospital care.

What happened on Puławska

Police say a Toyota Yaris exited Madalińskiego and turned onto Puławska towards Piaseczno. Then the driver moved from the right lane into the centre lane and collided with a Toyota Corolla. Consequently the Corolla occupants left the vehicle and walked away. Moreover witnesses saw the two men depart on foot immediately after the impact.

The pregnant Yaris driver suffered minor injuries. Therefore paramedics treated her in the ambulance and transported her to hospital for further checks. In addition several police units secured the scene and began collecting evidence.

Police response and legal consequences

The police launched search efforts and brought a tracking dog. However the dog could not pick up a reliable trail. Consequently officers are now working to trace surveillance footage and eyewitness statements. Moreover they will try to determine fault from the cars’ positions and damage.

Under Polish law drivers must stop and render assistance after a collision. Therefore leaving the scene can trigger criminal charges for fleeing and failing to help. In addition courts may impose fines, suspend driving licences, or sentence offenders to jail. Furthermore victims can pursue civil compensation from insurers.

Why this matters for expats

Foreigners face practical issues after road collisions. For example hospitals usually record patients with a PESEL (Polish national ID) or passport. In addition emergency treatment goes through the NFZ (National Health Fund) for insured residents, while private insurance may cover others. Moreover if you work here your employer may link claims to ZUS (social insurance). Therefore keep your passport, insurance card, and insurer contact ready.

If you witness or participate in an accident call 112 immediately. In addition stay at the scene unless medical evacuation forces you to leave. Moreover photograph damage and record licence plates. Therefore collect names and contact details of witnesses. Finally notify your insurer as soon as possible.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: In Poland you must stop after any traffic collision. Call 112 for emergencies and the police for collisions. Keep your passport and insurance details handy, and ask for a written police report (notatka). If you lack a PESEL, the hospital will accept your passport. For ongoing care, check if NFZ or your private insurer covers treatment. Finally contact your insurer and, if needed, your embassy for help with language or legal referrals.
