An off-duty municipal guard intervened and stopped a knifeman near the Warszawianka pool on Mokotów. The quick action prevented a likely attack and kept bystanders safe.

Off-duty municipal guard stops knifeman on Mokotów

The incident happened around 2:00 a.m. between May 16 and 17. A young couple stood near the entrance to the Warszawianka complex. Suddenly, a man approached them and issued violent threats. Moreover, he brandished a knife and threatened to kill them. The suspect showed signs of heavy intoxication. Breath tests later indicated roughly 2.0 per mille. Consequently, the situation posed an immediate danger to the public.

What happened and how authorities reacted

The officer, Michał Kuchta from Pruszków, was off duty and returning from a bowling outing. He noticed the disturbance and acted without hesitation. Therefore, he physically restrained the assailant and secured the scene. In addition, he stayed with the victims until police arrived. The police took custody of the suspect and placed him in a detention cell to sober up. Afterwards, officers planned further procedural steps. Authorities expect to charge the man with robbery using a dangerous weapon, a serious criminal offence under Polish law.

Local response and official recognition

City leaders praised the guard’s conduct. Piotr Bąk, the Mayor of Pruszków, publicly thanked Mr. Kuchta. Moreover, he awarded the guard a special financial prize. The gesture aimed to highlight civic duty and bravery beyond formal working hours. However, officials also reminded citizens to prioritise safety and rely on trained responders when possible.

For context, the Straż Miejska (municipal guard) differs from the Policja (national police). The municipal institution enforces local rules, traffic orders, and public order. In contrast, the national police handle serious crimes and investigations. Also, municipal guards usually carry less equipment and have narrower legal powers than police officers. Consequently, citizens should understand whom to call depending on the situation.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you witness violence, call emergency services immediately on 112. For non-urgent police help use 997. Remember that municipal guards (Straż Miejska) help enforce local rules, while the national police (Policja) handle criminal cases. Carry ID while out (a passport or local ID). In Poland, many formal processes use a PESEL number (national ID number). Also, healthcare works through NFZ (National Health Fund) and social contributions go to ZUS (social security). If you must give a statement, officers may ask for an ID and contact details. Therefore, note simple safety steps: keep distance, record evidence if safe, and report to police promptly.

The episode shows how rapid, calm action can avert harm in a crowded city. Moreover, it underlines the layered nature of Polish public safety. In addition, expats should know who to contact and what to expect if they become witnesses. Therefore, staying informed reduces stress and speeds up help.
