Shower or Bath? We Counted — Difference Up to PLN 1,300
We compared shower vs bath cost in Warsaw using local tariffs. Learn how heating method changes annual bills and what expats should know.
Shower vs bath cost matters more than you think for monthly budgets in Poland. We calculated detailed figures using Warsaw tariffs and common household heaters.
Method and headline numbers
We used the same approach as our dishwasher analysis. Consequently, we applied Warsaw rates: cold water with sewage at 16.03 PLN/m3. In addition, we used electricity at 0.80 PLN/kWh. Gas we converted to 0.40 PLN/kWh. Moreover, district heating for hot water totals 84.50 PLN/m3. We assumed an 8-minute shower with a 10 L/min handset, equal to 80 litres. We assumed a typical tub filled to 70 percent, equal to 120 litres. In both cases we used 70 percent hot water and 30 percent cold.
Detailed per-use costs
For a shower warmed by district heating, one use costs 5.11 PLN. However, an electric boiler raises the shower cost to 3.36 PLN. In addition, a gas boiler gives the cheapest shower at 2.51 PLN. For a bath, district heating costs 7.68 PLN per fill. Moreover, an electric boiler makes a bath 5.05 PLN. A gas-fired system costs 3.76 PLN per bath. Therefore, a bath costs roughly fifty percent more per use than a shower under the same heating method.
Annual costs and extremes
We annualised at 300 uses per year. Consequently, a shower on district heating costs about 1,533 PLN yearly. In contrast, a tub on district heating costs 2,304 PLN yearly. Moreover, the cheapest option is a gas-heated shower at 753 PLN per year. Therefore, the range between extremes exceeds 1,550 PLN annually for one person bathing daily. This gap equals several utility bills or a round-trip ticket to another EU city.
Saving levers: handset and habits
Changing the showerhead matters. An efficient handset at 6.5 L/min reduces a shower to 52 litres. Consequently, annual costs fall to about 489 PLN with gas heating. Moreover, installing such a handset costs roughly 50 to 150 PLN. Therefore, you recoup the price in under a month with daily use. Shortening a shower from eight to five minutes drops water use by nearly 40 percent. This change costs nothing and returns savings immediately.
Why this matters to expats? First, energy mix affects monthly cost far more than bathing style. Second, building systems vary between Warsaw districts. Consequently, two identical apartments can show very different bills. Third, families using tubs instead of showers incur several hundred to thousands PLN more per year. Therefore, small daily choices scale into real budget effects.
