Poland inflation worries as promotions mask price pressure
Poland inflation rose to 3.4% in August, surprising markets. Learn why this matters for expats and how promotions affect your grocery bill.
Poland inflation accelerated to 3.4% year-on-year in August, according to the GUS quick estimate. Consequently, many people who hoped price pressures were behind them received a clear warning signal.
What the official data show
The Central Statistical Office reported that consumer prices rose 0.4% from July to August. Moreover, the year-on-year reading reached 3.4%. Fuel costs contributed strongly to the rise. However, the number does not mean all prices jump at once. In addition, a positive inflation rate still implies that the average price level increases. Therefore households continue to feel the effect at the checkout.
Why businesses plan more price hikes
Grant Thornton surveyed medium and large firms early in 2026. They found that 60% planned to raise prices within the next 12 months. Meanwhile, only 3% planned price cuts. Firms cited higher labour costs and energy bills as main drivers. Consequently, companies feel persistent margin pressure. However, analysts noted that a stronger złoty or stable energy could ease some pressure. In addition, the situation differs from the peak inflation years of 2021 to 2023. Nevertheless, recent GUS numbers confirm that price pressure has not vanished.
Promotions and the shopping paradox — Poland inflation
Surprisingly, supermarket promotional prices fell in August. Tańszy Koszyk analysed 21,911 offers in nine retailer leaflets. As a result, promotional prices dropped 0.7% month to month. In addition, this was the fourth consecutive monthly decline. Yet almost half of promotions included a catch. Specifically, 47% of offers required a loyalty card, app, coupon, multi-buy, or product limit. Therefore shoppers must read small print carefully.
What promotions mean at the till
The report compared items with both regular and sale prices. For 11,929 such offers, regular prices totalled 180,045 PLN. Meanwhile, promotional prices summed to 126,533 PLN. Consequently, the discount equalled 29.7% on those items. Moreover, a typical ten-category basket cost 77.46 PLN on sale. By contrast, the same basket showed 113 PLN at regular prices. Therefore savings can be large for targeted shoppers. However, those savings often depend on meeting conditions such as using a store app or buying several units.
Some categories show opposite trends. For instance, edible fats fell about 14.3% year-on-year. Conversely, non-alcoholic drinks and certain packaged goods rose over 5% in July. In addition, UCE Research covered more than 103,000 prices across 64 chains, showing wide variation by product and retailer.
For residents, the mix of rising official inflation and falling promotional prices creates complexity. Therefore the real question becomes not only what costs more, but how you shop. Moreover, businesses signalling price increases mean wages, rents, and services may follow. In addition, statutory items like taxes, health insurance contributions (NFZ), and social security payments (ZUS) can change household budgets. For expats who pay fines or use local services, even small price shifts matter.
