Night house fire in Świdnik causes heavy damage

Night house fire in Świdnik gutted an attic and garage, causing PLN 300k losses and one injury. Emergency crews fought flames for hours.

Night house fire in Świdnik broke out after 11pm on Sunday, April 26. Consequently, emergency services raced to a property on Błękitna Street and fought flames for nearly three hours.

What happened and the immediate response

Fire crews found a two-storey masonry house alight. Moreover, the blaze consumed the attic and the adjoining garage. Therefore, firefighters from six units attended the scene. In addition, ambulance crews and police responded. Paweł Dańko, a senior officer at the county State Fire Service (Państwowa Straż Pożarna), said that twenty firefighters from Świdnik, Piaski, Minkowice and Bystrzejowice fought the fire. The operation lasted almost three hours, and crews worked to secure the structure and prevent spread to neighbouring homes.

Damage, casualties and investigation

Preliminary losses stand at about PLN 300,000. Consequently, the garage and its equipment burned completely. Moreover, the attic and roof structure suffered heavy damage. Therefore, the building requires a structural assessment before anyone returns. One resident suffered injuries and went to hospital. However, authorities did not release life-threatening status. In addition, police and fire investigators have opened inquiries. As a result, they will determine the cause and evaluate whether local safety rules were followed.

Night house fire in Świdnik: why this matters

For expats, the incident highlights practical risks in Polish housing. First, older roofs and attics often use combustible insulation. Therefore, electrical faults or heating problems can ignite quickly. Moreover, many Polish homes use solid-fuel stoves or chimneys. Consequently, maintenance matters. Second, property and liability insurance vary in coverage. Therefore, document damages with photos, police reports, and fire service statements immediately.

Local context and services

Świdnik sits just east of Lublin and hosts aviation industry employers. Consequently, many foreign workers live in rented houses and flats here. Moreover, commuting is common, and emergency access routes can matter. Therefore, keep your landlord informed about safety checks. In addition, Polish emergency number is 112. Use it for fire, medical, or police emergencies.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live in Poland, register your residence and keep insurance documents handy. NFZ (National Health Fund) usually covers urgent hospital care for insured residents. However, non-insured people may need private payment first. Also, PESEL (national ID number) or your temporary registration helps hospitals and insurers process claims. For compensation you might also deal with ZUS (social insurance, for workplace injury) or a local MOPS office (municipal social assistance). Finally, remember that a “mandat” means a fine for breaking local rules.
