Automatic checks mean a no insurance fine Poland can be 1,920 PLN for one day. Learn how the system works and what expats must do.
Poland’s automatic checks now mean a no insurance fine Poland can reach 1,920 PLN for a single day. Consequently, hundreds of thousands of vehicle owners have received payment demands from the Ubezpieczeniowy Fundusz Gwarancyjny (UFG).
No insurance fine Poland: what changed in 2026
The UFG has ramped up automated matching between vehicle records and insurer registers. Moreover, the fund detected 351,000 cases in 2024. Therefore, the growth reflects better detection, not mass fraud.
The law links penalties to the minimum wage. In 2026 that wage equals 4,806 PLN gross. Consequently, the fines rose automatically on New Year. For passenger cars the first-tier fine equals two times the minimum wage. Thus, even a one-day lapse gives a 1,920 PLN bill in 2026. However, trucks and buses face higher multipliers. In addition, motorcycles and trailers have lower flat rates.
How the system works and why you should care
The state compares Central Vehicle Registry records with active policies in real time. Moreover, the computer issues 95 percent of warnings without road stops. However, police checks still find only about four percent of missing policies.
If a policy expires, the system flags the gap immediately. Consequently, a car standing unused in a garage can trigger a notice. Therefore, owners of seasonal scooters, trailers, or tractors must remain vigilant. Note that only deregistration removes the obligation. Also, Polish rules require continuous OC insurance by law (art. 23 of the 2003 act).
Buying a used car creates a common trap. Close to 40 percent of UFG cases involve new owners. When you buy a vehicle with the seller’s policy still valid, the cover does not extend automatically after expiry. Therefore, you must sign your own contract before the old policy ends. In addition, unpaid instalments, short-term policies and insurer changes can break continuity.
Penalties, liability and practical steps
The UFG demand is an administrative letter with a 30-day response window. Moreover, you can send proof if the insurer delayed reporting. However, if the breach stands, you may pay, seek relief, or challenge the decision in court.
Do not ignore the notice. Otherwise, the fund sends the case to the tax office and officials may start enforcement. In addition, UFG can pursue regress claims if an uninsured vehicle causes damage. Consequently, civil liability claims can exceed fines and reach many thousands of zloty, or far more after a serious accident.
Therefore, check every registered vehicle you own. Set calendar reminders for OC expiry dates. Moreover, confirm new policies begin exactly when the old ones end. In addition, enable insurer SMS or email alerts but treat them only as backups.
