No better access to Majdanek cemetery gate

City rejects quick resurfacing for access to Majdanek cemetery, but pledges partial repairs to keep the side gate passable.

Access to Majdanek cemetery remains unchanged after Lublin rejected a fast resurfacing proposal. Consequently, the city will only carry out partial repairs to keep the side gate passable.

Why the side gate matters

The municipal cemetery at Majdanek serves eastern Poland. Moreover, it holds over 68,000 deceased across more than 40,000 graves. Therefore visitors often walk long distances to reach graves. In addition, most burials occur deep inside the grounds. Consequently many people prefer the side gate near sector S7. However the lane to that gate runs along the cemetery wall. The lane uses old concrete slabs. Moreover, the slabs show growing cracks and gaps. Therefore drivers face discomfort and risk of damage.

access to Majdanek cemetery: city rejects quick asphalt fix

A city councilor proposed a short-term fix. Piotr Gawryszczak asked officials to cover the slabs with reclaimed asphalt, known locally as destrukt. However the city rejected this idea. The Deputy Mayor for Investment, Tomasz Fulara, explained the decision. Moreover, the municipal road authority, Zarząd Dróg i Transportu Miejskiego (ZDiTM), argued against it. They said loose material would not bond with concrete. Therefore the surface would crack and crumble fast. Consequently the condition could worsen rather than improve.

In addition the city confirmed it plans a larger road project. The plan would extend Dekutowskiego Street to Głuska Street. Moreover that scheme would include new access to the far side of the cemetery. However the municipality has not set a construction date. Therefore the short-term question remains urgent for families and funeral services.

What the city will do now

City officials said they will perform partial repairs. Consequently teams will fill gaps and holes between the concrete slabs. Moreover they will carry out spot fixes during regular street maintenance. Therefore the lane should stay passable for now. However these measures do not constitute a full resurfacing. In addition users should expect intermittent works and temporary access changes.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you visit graves at Majdanek, prepare for limited vehicle access. Bring good walking shoes and allow extra time. Moreover taxis may avoid the narrow lane. Therefore consider parking near the main gate or arranging a closer pickup. In addition report dangerous road spots to the municipal road authority (ZDiTM) via Lublin’s official website. Note that some services require a PESEL number (Polish national ID) or local contact details. Finally, if a vehicle sustains damage, check your insurer and document the scene.
