Body Found in Vistula Near Poniatowski Bridge

A tragic search ended with a body found in the Vistula after a man entered the water near Poniatowski Bridge.

The city search for a missing man ended tragically when rescuers pulled a body from the river on the night of August 16, and the report described a body found in the Vistula after a witness saw a man enter the water in clothing.

Emergency services received the first call at 18:45. Consequently, teams moved to the popular Poniatówka beach on the Praga-Południe bank. The witness told rescuers that a man aged about 25 to 30 entered the Vistula fully clothed. However, he disappeared into the current and did not return to shore.

Search operation and recovery

Firefighters, police and specialist divers launched a coordinated response. Moreover, five fire units operated two boats. In addition, the city operational officer and the Specialist Water Rescue and Diving Group joined the mission. The River Police used two boats. Furthermore, land police deployed about eight patrols. Volunteers from the Anikar Search and Rescue Group also assisted. Rescuers searched the current and the riverbank for about two hours. Consequently, they recovered a body roughly 20 metres from the spot the witness indicated. Rescuers pulled the body from the water at around 21:12 and then handed the scene to investigators.

body found in the Vistula: what officials said

The police confirmed investigators treat the case as a drowning. Moreover, officers said the body showed no signs of unusual injuries. Therefore, the prosecutor’s office (prokuratura, the public prosecutor) opened routine checks. Police from KRP VII in Praga-Południe handle local inquiries. In addition, autopsy and toxicology tests will determine the precise cause. Meanwhile, investigators will review witness statements and any available footage.

Local pattern and safety concerns

This incident follows other recent drownings along Warsaw’s river. For example, authorities recovered a 45-year-old woman from the river on August 13 near Plaża Romantyczna in Wawer. Thus, this latest death marks the fourth drowning on the Warsaw stretch of the Vistula this holiday season. Consequently, officials warn residents and visitors about strong currents and unpredictable conditions. Moreover, many popular river beaches remain unofficial and lack lifeguards. Therefore, swimming outside designated zones increases risk.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live in Poland, learn the local emergency steps. Call 112 for rescue. Register incidents with police and the prosecutor if required. Contact your embassy after a death. Understand Polish terms: PESEL (national ID number), ZUS (social security), NFZ (national health fund), and mandat (on-the-spot fine). Also note that civil registration of death happens at Urząd Stanu Cywilnego, and authorities may require identification or a family representative.

For expats, the river’s appeal can mislead. Consequently, avoid entering the water in clothes or after drinking. Moreover, check for marked swimming areas and lifeguards. If a loved one goes missing, report immediately to police and provide witness details. In addition, keep the embassy informed for consular help. Finally, Warsaw authorities continue investigations, and they ask witnesses to contact KRP VII.
