New ZUS Limits: 6463.20 zł Threshold from Sept 2026
New ZUS earnings limit 6463.20 zł from Sept 2026 may reduce or suspend pensions for earners. Learn what expats should watch.
Lead: From September 1, 2026 the ZUS earnings limit 6463.20 zł will start to matter for many pensioners who still work. Consequently, the Social Insurance Institution announced two thresholds that can reduce or suspend payments.
What changed and who it affects
On August 18 the institution published new monthly thresholds. Moreover, the rules apply to people who receive early pensions or certain disability pensions. However, retirees who reached the standard retirement age usually keep full benefits. In addition, people whose pensions the state raised to the minimum should check carefully. Otherwise, a work income spike might remove that top-up.
ZUS thresholds and practical effects
The first threshold equals 70 percent of the average wage. Therefore, from September it stands at 6463.20 zł gross per month. Furthermore, a second threshold equals 130 percent of the average wage. Thus, it equals 12 003.10 zł gross per month. If a pensioner earns less than the first threshold, ZUS will not reduce the pension. However, if earnings fall between the two thresholds, the institution may reduce the pension by the excess amount. In addition, ZUS caps the amount of reduction each month. Consequently, the maximum cuts differ by benefit type. For example, since March 2026 ZUS caps the cut at 989.41 zł for full disability pensions. Moreover, it caps the cut at 742.10 zł for partial disability pensions. Also, the cap for a survivor’s pension paid to one person equals 841.05 zł.
Why the new ceiling matters for expats
Many foreigners work in Poland while claiming local pensions from past employment. Therefore, these thresholds can change household budgets quickly. Moreover, wages and overtime fluctuate in sectors such as IT, hospitality, and construction. As a result, a month with extra income can push someone above a threshold. Consequently, that person could see a reduced payment or a suspension in the next cycle. In addition, the limits change several times a year. For instance, authorities lowered both thresholds for September compared to June. Thus, someone safe in summer might cross the line in autumn without a raise.
Consequently, check your earnings each month and compare them to the thresholds. Moreover, keep in mind the caps on reductions. Therefore, small overruns do not always erase a whole pension. However, large overruns can suspend payments until income drops. In addition, you can contact ZUS to clarify specific situations. Furthermore, an accountant or expatriate advisor can help with planning.
