How Much You Must Earn for a 5,000 PLN Pension

Calculations show a 40-year-old man needs ~10,000 PLN gross, a woman ~17,000 PLN to aim for a 5,000 PLN pension from ZUS.

New calculations show what salary a 40-year-old must earn today to aim for a 5,000 PLN pension from ZUS. The gap between men and women proves surprisingly large, and it matters for anyone living in Poland.

How much do men and women need today?

Analysts at InFakt examined model scenarios. Moreover, they focused on people who are now 40 years old. Consequently, a man would need roughly 10,000 PLN gross per month. However, a woman in the same age group would need about 17,000 PLN gross per month. In addition, the 7,000 PLN gap reflects different retirement ages. The system does not charge different contributions by gender. Instead, it counts years of contributions and life expectancy.

Why the numbers differ

Poland sets the retirement age at 65 for men and 60 for women. Therefore, women usually build contributions over fewer years. Moreover, ZUS divides the accumulated capital by the expected months of life after retirement. Consequently, retiring earlier often reduces monthly payments. In addition, working longer increases both contributions and the divisor. Therefore, a single extra year of work can raise the future pension by an estimated 10-15%.

5,000 PLN pension from ZUS: the wider picture

Today, the replacement rate stands at about 54%. However, projection models from ZUS and the IMF expect it to fall to roughly 29% by 2050. Therefore, future first pensions may cover a much smaller share of pre-retirement pay. Moreover, this means high pay near retirement will not guarantee an equivalent pension. Consequently, career history, constant contributions, and the timing of retirement will matter more than a last salary.

What the calculation method means

ZUS calculates pensions from accumulated and revalued contributions. In addition, it includes subaccounts and any initial capital. Then the institution divides the total by expected remaining life in months. Therefore, two people with the same pay can get different pensions. Moreover, gaps appear after career breaks, lower contributions, or earlier retirement.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you are an expat, check your ZUS account online and keep your PESEL number handy. ZUS is Poland’s Social Insurance Institution. NFZ covers health care. In addition, employer schemes like PPK exist. You can also use IKE or IKZE to save privately. Therefore, verify which contributions your employer pays. Moreover, consult a bilingual accountant if you plan long-term in Poland.

Experts stress that model figures are not guarantees. In addition, many variables can change over 25 years. Consequently, salary growth, career moves, and legal reforms may alter outcomes. Therefore, everyone should review their ZUS projection. Moreover, anyone who finds a low forecast can consider three paths: extend work life, boost statutory contributions, or build private savings through PPK, IKE, or IKZE.

For a 40-year-old, the numbers show urgency. However, they also offer clear levers to improve retirement pay. In addition, checking your ZUS account gives a realistic starting point. Therefore, act early to avoid unpleasant surprises decades from now.
