New teacher pension expands access from 1 Sept 2026
Poland opens the new teacher pension from 1 Sept 2026 for more teachers. Learn eligibility and what expats should consider about ZUS and working after retirement.
Important change from 1 September 2026: The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) will open access to the new teacher pension for another cohort of educators. The new teacher pension gives some teachers the right to retire before the standard retirement age.
The September 2026 expansion and who it affects
From 1 September 2026, teachers born after 31 August 1969 may apply for the new teacher pension. Moreover, ZUS phased this benefit in over three stages. Consequently, those born before 1 September 1966 qualified in 2024. Then, in 2025, ZUS extended access to teachers born between 1 September 1966 and 31 August 1969. Therefore this third stage finally covers later cohorts.
Key eligibility rules you must know
Birth year alone does not guarantee a pension. Applicants must meet several conditions. First, teachers must have started actual teaching work before 1 January 1999. In addition, they need at least 30 years of contribution periods. Moreover, within those 30 years, you must have at least 20 years of actual teaching or pedagogical work. That work must be at least half of the statutory teaching load. Consequently, you also generally must terminate your employment relationship to claim the benefit. However, ZUS says you cannot already qualify for a no‑age teacher pension under Article 88(2a) of the Teacher’s Charter (Karta Nauczyciela).
How the benefit is calculated and paid
ZUS calculates each new teacher pension individually. It uses your indexed contributions on your ZUS account, your indexed initial capital, and the funds on your subaccount. Then, ZUS divides that base by the average remaining life expectancy for your age. Therefore the final amount varies by person. In addition, ZUS requires that the pension not fall below the legally set minimum pension.
Work after retirement and inheritance implications
You can return to teaching after getting the new teacher pension. However, you must get permission from the pedagogical supervision authority. Also, your total post‑retirement workload cannot exceed half of the full teaching load. If you exceed that limit, ZUS may suspend your pension. Moreover, funds transferred from your subaccount and from the former Open Pension Funds (OFE) become account assets. Consequently, those funds do not follow the same inheritance rules as money left on a subaccount under other schemes.
Deciding when to apply requires careful math. Consequently, consult ZUS or a pension adviser before you file. Moreover, ask about your subaccount balance and how OFE transfers affect your heirs. Therefore international teachers should secure documentation early, especially if they taught under short contracts or abroad.
