Rooftop helipad in Rzeszów set to change emergency care

Rzeszów hospital helipad will allow Black Hawk landings and speed critical transfers. Finish expected June 2026.

The construction of a new Rzeszów hospital helipad nears completion on the roof of a multi-storey car park. Consequently, the structure will accept both air ambulances and military Black Hawks, changing urgent care at the clinic.

Rzeszów hospital helipad: what is being built

The city builds the landing pad atop an eight-storey parking facility. Moreover, engineers reinforced the roof to carry aircraft up to 11.5 tonnes. Therefore, the pad exceeds typical hospital standards in Poland. Also, the hospital plans to connect the roof directly to the emergency ward. Consequently, medics will move patients by elevator through a glazed link. In addition, construction crews will keep building until June 2026.

Why weight capacity and Black Hawk access matter

The designers chose the higher weight limit for a reason. Furthermore, regional commanders use Black Hawks for military medevac and rescue missions. However, most hospital helipads accept lighter civil air ambulances only. Thus, this pad gives the region more flexibility in crises. Also, rescue teams can bring large equipment with patients. Consequently, teams can respond to major accidents or disasters faster.

Parking, access and the wider hospital plan

The new parking will hold nearly 500 cars. Moreover, architects included six lifts and stair cores. Therefore, staff and visitors will find easy vertical transport. The rooftop helipad will link directly to the SOR and the Trauma Centre. Consequently, clinicians expect to cut patient handover times. In addition, the hospital will remove the existing ground helipad later. Thus, planners will build the Podkarpackie Pediatric Medicine Centre there.

The whole project costs 76,180,163 zł. Moreover, the regional government underwrote most funds. Also, the central state contributed over 13 million zł. Therefore, hospital managers paid the remainder from own budgets. Meanwhile, officials discussed parallel work on the Cardiac Diseases Centre. Furthermore, the clinic already finished the first phase of pediatric cardiology modernization.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: Emergency care in Poland works differently than in some countries. First, emergency treatment (accident and acute illness) usually receives immediate care at a hospital, even if you lack private insurance. In addition, the NFZ (National Health Fund) covers urgent hospital work for insured residents. However, non-residents should carry ID and travel insurance. Also, EU citizens should bring an EHIC or GHIC card. Moreover, hospitals will ask for PESEL for administration later, but doctors treat emergencies first. Therefore, call 112 for ambulance and 998 for fire rescue. Finally, if you become a resident, register with a GP to get routine care and links to specialist services.

Local leaders argue the helipad will improve safety across Subcarpathia. Moreover, they say faster transfers will raise survival chances. However, critics ask about ongoing maintenance costs. Therefore, managers must secure budgets for operations too. Meanwhile, residents watch the site as construction reaches topping out.
