Crown fire near Warsaw forces evacuations

A crown fire near Warsaw spread rapidly on May 28, prompting evacuations and heavy firefighting. Read what expats should know.

A crown fire near Warsaw broke out on Thursday afternoon, May 28, in forests around Międzyleś. Consequently, authorities evacuated two villages and mobilised heavy firefighting resources.

Crown fire near Warsaw: why it matters

The blaze grew from roughly 5 hectares to over 30 hectares in under four hours. Moreover, gusty winds across Mazovia helped the flames jump tree crowns. Therefore firefighters faced a so-called crown fire, which travels far faster than ground fire. Fire crews reported more than 400 personnel and 65 fire units on site. In addition, two Dromader air tankers and a police Black Hawk helicopter joined the operation.

However, aircraft firefighting stopped at night. Consequently ground teams focused on extinguishing surface fires and securing fire lines. Moreover, officials planned to resume aerial drops at first light. The regional forestry offices did not rule out arson. Therefore police and prosecutors will investigate the cause.

Operational response and constraints

Minister Marcin Kierwiński and senior State Fire Service commanders attended the scene. In addition, forces from outside Mazovia joined the response. Firefighters built containment lines and doused hotspots. However, the wind made direct frontal attack on the crowns too dangerous. Consequently crews concentrated on protecting settlements and critical access roads.

Evacuations affected Ołdakowizna and Rządza villages. Moreover police used roughly 100 officers to move residents to a school in Stanisławów. Authorities said evacuated people could sleep at the school and receive food. Therefore the response prioritised human safety over asset protection. DK50 between Łochów and Stanisławów remained closed, which disrupted regional traffic.

Impact on residents and travel

If you live or travel near Wołomin or Mińsk counties, avoid the area between Jadowo, Stanisławów and Łochów. Moreover do not drive to view the fire. Consequently civilian traffic can block emergency access. If you have friends or family in Ołdakowizna or Rządza, contact them and tell them to follow police instructions.

However, expats should also consider administrative effects. For example, if you need urgent medical care, call 112 or go to an emergency department that accepts NFZ (public health insurer) patients. In addition bring ID and any prescriptions. Note that some services use your PESEL (national ID number). Also know that ZUS handles social security matters, while local municipalities coordinate shelter and logistics.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If authorities evacuate your area, follow police directions and go to the designated shelter (the school in Stanisławów). Moreover carry ID, medication, and any documents that show residency. PESEL (national ID number) helps speed administrative aid. NFZ (public health insurer) covers emergency care for insured residents. ZUS manages social benefits if you later need financial help. In addition check official updates on the Komenda Stołeczna Policji X account or local municipal websites. Finally do not attempt to return until authorities confirm it is safe.
