30 Hectares Burning Near Warsaw — Evacuations

A fast-moving forest fire near Warsaw has forced evacuations and closed DK50. Authorities suspect arson and use air tankers.

Thirty hectares of woodland blazed on Thursday afternoon in a forest fire near Warsaw, forcing the evacuation of two villages and the closure of national road DK50. Authorities deployed more than 400 firefighters, two Dromader water bombers and a police Black Hawk helicopter.

What happened and who is fighting it

The blaze started on 28 May near Międzylesie in Wołomin county. Consequently, high winds and bone-dry ground pushed flames across municipal borders into Mińsk county. Moreover, crews reported a crown fire that spread across tree tops. Deputy Interior Minister Wiesław Szczepański warned that crown fires move far faster than ground fires. Therefore, pilots must attack from the air by day. However, crews must pause aerial operations at night for safety.

Why the forest fire near Warsaw spread so fast

The weather created extreme risk that day. In addition, high temperature, low humidity and gusting wind combined with dry forest litter. The fire grew from about five hectares to more than thirty in under four hours. Consequently, ground crews struggled to control multiple ignition points. Local officials suggested possible deliberate ignition. However, police and prosecutors will investigate the cause.

Evacuations, road closures and logistics

Authorities evacuated the villages of Ołdakowizna and Rządza at night. Police used roughly one hundred officers to move residents to Stanisławów primary school. Moreover, officials offered shelter, meals and overnight care. The fire closed DK50 between Łochów and Stanisławów. Therefore, drivers must use detours via Wyszków or Mińsk Mazowiecki. The prime minister said he remains in contact with ministers and commanders.

What this means for residents and drivers

If you live or travel between Jadowo, Stanisławów and Łochów, avoid the area. Do not drive toward smoke just to watch. Emergency vehicles need clear access. In addition, smoke drift can reduce air quality across Warsaw. Check local news and social channels, including Policja_KSP on X, for live updates.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you are an expat near the fire, call 112 for immediate help. Contact your embassy if you need consular help. Note that Polish systems use PESEL for official IDs, ZUS for social security, NFZ for healthcare and “mandat” means a fine. You do not need a PESEL to receive emergency shelter, but you should carry a passport or other ID if possible.

How authorities operate and what to expect

Fire services coordinate the night shift to protect fire lines and burn out fuel. Consequently, aircraft return at dawn to resume water drops. Moreover, officials will not expand evacuations without cause. Police coordinate transport and maintain a muster point at the school. Therefore, family members and friends should call or message directly to confirm safety and location.

Why expats should care

Wildfires can disrupt commuting, deliveries and services. Moreover, heavy smoke can aggravate asthma and other conditions. In addition, closures of DK50 affect logistics and regional travel. Therefore, businesses and commuters should plan routes ahead. Finally, watch official channels for legal notices if authorities impose temporary restrictions or fines for violating closures.
