Villages Evacuated as Huge Forest Fire Spreads

Authorities order an evacuation near Warsaw as over 400 firefighters battle a spreading crown fire; masks and shelter provided.

Evacuation near Warsaw: Two villages were ordered to leave their homes after a rapidly expanding forest fire threatened communities east of the capital. Consequently, authorities moved residents to a local school where they received shelter, food, and protective masks.

What happened and who is affected

The fire began in mixed private and state forests in Masovia. Moreover, it crossed lands administered by three forest districts: Drewnica, Łochów and Mińsk. However, the blaze escalated into a crown fire. Therefore, ground crews faced extreme difficulty fighting flames that raced across tree crowns.

Police led the evacuation. Consequently, officers transported residents of Ołdakowizna and Rządza to Stanisławów primary school. The mayor, Kinga Sosińska, confirmed the school offers overnight shelter, meals and basic equipment. In addition, firefighters distributed smoke masks to people in nearby villages.

Response on the ground

More than 400 firefighters work in dozens of units. Moreover, two specialised firefighting companies named NAREW and WISŁA joined the response. Additionally, aviation assets helped. The State Forests deployed firefighting single-engine planes called dromaders. In addition, the police flew a Black Hawk helicopter to support coordination.

The fire now covers over 30 hectares, officials said. Consequently, authorities closed national road DK50 near the 226 km mark. Police asked drivers to avoid Międzyleś. Therefore, they stressed not to obstruct emergency operations. So far, responders reported no casualties.

Why the fire is so dangerous

Forests authorities described a classic crown fire. Consequently, the flames travel at treetop level with the wind. Moreover, crews cannot safely apply effective ground tactics during strong gusts. In addition, low humidity and a long dry spell left the forest floor and trees extremely combustible. Therefore, the fire can spread fast and unpredictably.

Immediate practical information for expats

If you live east of Warsaw, monitor local radio and official police channels. Moreover, heed evacuation orders immediately. However, do not drive into areas near DK50. In addition, expect temporary traffic controls and possible disruptions to regional bus services.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: Polish emergency services coordinate closely with local municipalities. For example, police will transport evacuees to communal shelters such as schools. If you need official ID or paperwork later, bring your PESEL (Polish national ID number) or passport. Also know ZUS means the social insurance office and NFZ means the public health fund. Finally, a “mandat” refers to an on-the-spot fine. Keep contact numbers for your embassy and register with local officials if you need help.

Authorities continue to fight the blaze under challenging conditions. Consequently, the operation includes local county units and a regional command led by the Mazovian Fire Brigade deputy commander. Moreover, the public should avoid the scene and allow teams to operate safely. Therefore, residents in nearby areas must stay ready to evacuate if needed.
