ZUS lowers pension income limits from Sept 1

Poland pension income limits fall on Sept 1, 2026. Early retirees must watch earnings or face cuts or suspension.

From 1 September 2026 Poland will lower two income thresholds that affect some retirees. Poland pension income limits will fall, and payouts may be cut or suspended.

What the Poland pension income limits mean

ZUS (the Social Insurance Institution) announced new quarterly thresholds. The lower limit drops to 6463.20 PLN gross. The higher limit falls to 12003.10 PLN gross. GUS (Statistics Poland) published the wage data that sets these values. Consequently, some working pensioners may see automatic reductions. Moreover, crossing the higher limit will trigger suspension of the benefit.

Who is affected and why it matters

Not all pensioners must worry. People who reached the statutory retirement age may earn without limits. In Poland that age equals 60 for women and 65 for men. However, the new thresholds apply to early retirees and many disability pensioners. In addition, some pension types, such as special “emerytury pomostowe”, also face limits. Therefore, a worker earning near 6463.20 PLN can lose part of a pension. Also, a monthly paycheck above 12003.10 PLN can stop payments entirely. This change matters most in big cities. For example, Warsaw has many high-paid roles. Consequently, professionals and former civil servants must check combined incomes from jobs and business activities.

How ZUS monitors incomes and what to watch

ZUS checks earnings on an ongoing basis. Employers and payers send contribution reports. Therefore, the institution usually notices excess income. Moreover, pensioners must report new work and expected income to ZUS. In addition, beneficiaries must submit annual income confirmations by end of February. If you inform ZUS, the office can limit reclaim to the prior year. However, if you fail to notify ZUS, it may demand repayment for up to three years. Also, ZUS can apply monthly or annual reconciliation depending on the case. Consequently, keep payslips and statements for future checks. The law sets maximum monthly reductions for various pensions. For example, ZUS may reduce full disability pensions by up to 989.41 PLN monthly, as set in 2026 rules.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you are an expat receiving a Polish pension, check whether your benefit is subject to limits. Keep your PESEL number and correspondence with ZUS ready. Moreover, inform ZUS about new jobs or freelance income. Also, collect employer statements and yearly tax records. Therefore, avoid surprises and possible demands to return payments.
