Warsaw keeps offices open on August 14

August 14 public holiday Poland affects national administration, but Warsaw city offices chose August 21. Check which offices close.

Quick update: The government declared Friday, August 14, 2026, a day off for national civil servants, but Warsaw city hall set a different date. August 14 public holiday Poland therefore does not mean all public offices close in Warsaw.

Who ordered the day off and why it matters

The Prime Minister signed an order on January 5, 2026. Consequently, the central government moved the lost holiday from Saturday, August 15. The aim protects employees under the Labour Code. Moreover, the order covers ministries, central agencies, voivodeship offices, courts, and tax offices. Therefore many national services will close on August 14.

How Warsaw chose a different date

However, the Prime Minister cannot order city hall to change its calendar. The city president set August 21, 2026, as the compensatory day. As a result, Warsaw city offices and all district offices will work normally on August 14. In addition, they will close on Friday, August 21 instead. Citizens should note the mismatch before they plan visits.

What this means for your appointments and documents

If you need a PESEL-related registration, an ID card, or vehicle registration, visit your district office on August 14. For example, Mokotów, Wola, and Praga-Południe will accept appointments that day. Conversely, if you need services from a voivode’s office, a tax office, or the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS), expect closures on August 14. Therefore check each institution’s website before you travel.

Practical guidance for expats and residents

First, verify your appointment online. Many Warsaw departments use reservation systems. Second, ask your employer early which compensatory day they chose. Employers must give employees a day off when a public holiday falls on a Saturday. However, private employers can schedule the day within the settlement period. Consequently, your company might pick a different date than the public sector.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: In Poland, the Labour Code gives workers a replacement day off when a statutory holiday falls on a Saturday. ZUS handles social insurance contributions. NFZ runs public healthcare. PESEL is your national ID number. Employers must compensate only employees on employment contracts. Contractors and the self-employed do not get this extra day. Therefore ask HR and check official websites before you visit an office.

Moreover, plan around bank and tax deadlines. Tax offices and the Krajowa Informacja Skarbowa will close on August 14 nationwide. As a result, avoid waiting until the last day to submit documents. Also, court schedules may change. Consequently, if you expect a hearing or a meeting with a judge, confirm the date in advance.

Finally, August remains a busy holiday month. Therefore book appointments early. In addition, check whether your employer uses a three- or four-month settlement period. That choice can move your compensatory day to another month. Above all, do not assume national headlines apply to city services in Warsaw.
