Vistula Hits Record Low — Will Warsaw Run Out of Water?

Record Vistula low water level in Warsaw raises questions about taps. Read why the city should not lose water and what expats should know.

Warsaw recorded a historic Vistula low water level on Friday, 7 August, when the gauge at Warszawa-Bulwary showed 102 centimetres. Consequently, the river exposed sandbanks and rocks along the city promenades, and locals began to ask if water could run out in taps.

Why the surface drop does not equal a tap crisis

Over 70% of Warsaw’s drinking water comes from the Vistula. However, the city does not pump that water from the river surface. Instead, water enters the supply from about seven metres below the riverbed. Therefore engineers rely on the natural sand and gravel layers beneath the channel. Moreover, the key feature of this system is a unique infiltration well called “Gruba Kaśka.” It sits directly in the riverbed and feeds fifteen perforated drains that spread nearly two kilometres. Consequently water then flows to the Praga and Filtry treatment plants. Therefore Warsaw’s taps keep running even when the river looks dangerously low.

How the infrastructure copes with record lows

Low water stresses the system. However, it does not mean immediate cuts in supply. The utility uses floating hydraulic agitators to clean and loosen sediment above the drains. Locals call these machines “Chude Wojtki.” Moreover, the machines now work 12-hour shifts, including Sundays. In addition, the city can shift about 30% of its demand to the Zegrze reservoir. Therefore the twin-source approach creates redundancy. However, technicians still face more maintenance and monitoring during droughts.

Vistula low water level: technical changes and records

Technically, this year’s gauge reading is not fully comparable with older data. In 2025, IMGW-PIB and Wody Polskie adjusted the zero point on the Bulwary gauge for modernization. Consequently 102 cm today does not map directly to past centimetre values. Nevertheless, pedestrians and photographers see the difference. Rocks and sandbanks appear where boats used to navigate. Therefore the river’s visible shrinkage has symbolic and practical consequences.

What this means for residents and businesses

For households, the immediate takeaway remains simple. The city should not run out of treated water. However, residents will notice increased maintenance works near intake points. Moreover, the utilities may ask the public to conserve water during prolonged drought. Therefore businesses that rely on large water volumes, like car washes or construction firms, should prepare contingency plans. In addition, boat traffic, riverside events, and river ecology face real strain.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: As an expat, you should know two things. First, Warsaw’s public water comes mostly from subsurface river infiltration, so low surface levels do not equal tap shortages. Second, Polish institutions often use acronyms: IMGW-PIB is the meteorological institute, and Wody Polskie runs water management. If you need public services, remember common identifiers like PESEL (national ID number), ZUS (social insurance), and NFZ (health insurer). Conserve water when authorities request it, and check municipal updates on Warszawa’s official site or your building manager.
