Van Trapped on Railway Crossing, Hit by Train (Video)

A van trapped on railway crossing in Bieniewice was hit by a train; PKP PLK released video and safety advice for drivers.

A van trapped on railway crossing in Bieniewice was struck by a train, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK) released footage showing the moments before impact. Consequently, the operator published the clip as a warning to drivers and to remind people what to do if a vehicle stalls on the rails.

van trapped on railway crossing: what happened

The surveillance recording shows the hazard building for about three minutes. Moreover, the delivery van entered the level crossing and then suffered a mechanical failure. Witnesses tried to push the vehicle off the tracks, but they could not move it. Therefore, by the time the oncoming train became visible, people abandoned the car and moved to a safe distance. The train hit the front of the van and threw the wreck clear of the rails. Consequently, the clip underlines how fast a routine crossing can become life-threatening.

Why PKP PLK released the video

PKP PLK published the footage to remind drivers about clear rules at crossings. In addition, the institution stressed that barriers are built to be driven through if necessary to escape. Therefore, drivers should not hesitate to break a barrier if the vehicle becomes stuck. However, if the car cannot move, the most important act is immediate evacuation. Moreover, people should stand well clear of the crossing and call for help.

How to report an emergency at a crossing

PKP PLK advises calling emergency services and giving the crossing identification found on the Yellow Sticker. The sticker (“Żółta Naklejka PLK”) sits on the inner arm of the St. Andrew’s cross or on the barrier drive machine near the tracks. Therefore, that number lets responders find the exact location quickly. In Poland dial 112 for any emergency, and also inform the railway by using the sticker number. Consequently, every second counts in these situations.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If your vehicle stalls on tracks, leave it immediately and move to a safe distance. Then call 112 and read the crossing number from the Yellow Sticker (“Żółta Naklejka PLK”). The sticker helps railway staff locate the crossing fast. Remember that Polish paperwork and systems use terms like PESEL (national ID number) and mandat (on-the-spot fine). If you need to contact rail staff directly, the Yellow Sticker number helps them coordinate with local services and with PKP PLK.

Footage from Bieniewice also serves as a practical lesson. Moreover, local conditions vary across Poland, and the Masovian region handles many level crossings near urban fringes. Therefore, expats should learn to spot the Yellow Sticker and to act without hesitation.
