To Warsaw in an Hour, Gdańsk in Three: Poland’s Rail Plan

Poland unveils a 4700km Integrated Rail Network including Poland high-speed rail to cut city travel times and link 27 new towns.

The government unveiled a sweeping plan to modernise rail travel across Poland, and the proposal includes the Poland high-speed rail concept. The programme aims to cut travel times dramatically, and officials estimate the scheme will cost about 610 billion złoty.

Ambition and scale

The plan builds roughly 4,700 kilometres of new lines. Moreover, planners expect about 2,700 km will suit high-speed trains. In addition, authorities will modernise many existing routes. Consequently, passengers may reach Warsaw from Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk or Bydgoszcz in about 100 minutes. Therefore, Warsaw will sit within an hour and forty minutes of those cities.

Poland high-speed rail: Key routes and times

Planners propose 19 main corridors. For example, they will build a high-speed “Y” connecting Warsaw, the new central airport, Łódź, Poznań and Wrocław. Moreover, they will extend the Central Magistral toward the Tricity. In addition, the Rail Baltica segment will run from Ełk to the Lithuanian border. Consequently, the project includes cross-border links like Katowice to Ostrava.

Who benefits and when

Officials plan about 1,000 km of new lines ready by 2035. However, full delivery will take decades. The network aims to serve up to 720 million passengers yearly by mid-century. Moreover, planners expect long-distance travel to grow fastest. Therefore, regional services will also expand. As a result, many smaller towns will join the national grid. In addition, the scheme targets 27 towns without current rail access.

Freight, strategy and security

The project will speed up freight trains from about 34 km/h to 56 km/h. Moreover, designers plan 23 new intermodal terminals. Therefore, businesses can shift more cargo from road to rail. In addition, the network will support military mobility and national security. Consequently, the same lines will serve civilian and defence needs.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live in Poland, faster trains may change commuting and housing choices. For residents, buy a season ticket if you commute daily. Moreover, register for local discounts where eligible, and remember Polish ID systems. For example, PESEL (national ID number) helps authorities track benefits. Also note ZUS (social insurance) and NFZ (public health) tie into your registration. Finally, keep in mind a “mandat” means a fine in Poland, and inspectors may fine travellers without valid tickets.

Experts worked on the Integrated Rail Network for over 18 months. They analysed 8,000 km of potential routes. In addition, regional governments and industry groups contributed. Consequently, the plan resembles the motorway drive that reshaped Poland in the past 30 years. However, it will require sustained public funding and political will. Therefore, delivery depends on budgets, EU funding and private partners.

For expats, the project matters in practical ways. Firstly, it will reduce domestic flights and car travel. Secondly, it may change where you choose to live. Moreover, it will affect job access and property values. Therefore, follow planning updates if you plan to buy or rent.
