Lublin handball stars from PGE MKS El-Volt are among the favourites for this season’s Gladiators awards in the ORLEN Superliga. Moreover, the selection committee again included a representative from Dziennik Wschodni, underlining local media influence.
PGE MKS El-Volt nominations and chances
Maria Prieto O’Mullony leads the club’s charge for the top honour, the Player of the Season award. However, she faces strong rivals such as Katarzyna Cygan, Maia Gomaa, Kinga Jakubowska and Romana Roszak. In addition, coach Paweł Tetelewski earned a nomination for Best Coach. Therefore, he will compete with Bożena Karkut and Horatiu Pascu. Also, Paulina Wdowiak secured a nomination for Goalkeeper of the Season. Consequently, she will battle Maia Goma and Karolina Sarnecka.
Joanna Andruszak represents the club in the Pivot category. Moreover, two Lublin wingers made the shortlist. Sanja Radosavljević and Adrianna Górna both earned nominations. In addition, Dominika Więckowska appears on the shortlist for Defender of the Season. Therefore, the club could collect awards across positions.
Voting, media and the selection committee
The voting runs through the official Superliga app until 15 May at 14:00. Moreover, fans determine 40% of the final result. The remaining 60% comes from votes by players and coaching staff of all ORLEN Superliga clubs. Consequently, the process mixes popular opinion with professional assessment. In addition, national media figures acted as panelists. They included Iwona Niedźwiedź, Patrycja Szarmacher, Karolina Siódmak, Mateusz Stefanik, Marcin Muras, Damian Orłowicz, Piotr Wesołowski and Piotr Bugajny.
Local media maintained strong representation. Leszek Wspaniały, Kamil Kozioł, Bartosz Wencław and Radosław Kossakowski all joined the committee. Moreover, Michał Sobczak, Zbigniew Cieńciała, Marek Hajkowski and Marcin Ciarkowski also participated. Therefore, the voting body combined national reach with regional knowledge. Consequently, the results will reflect both expert opinion and fan sentiment.
SuperGladiator and what it means
Organisers already named one SuperGladiator. They honoured Weronika Gawlik for her career achievements. Moreover, the veteran goalkeeper won seven national titles and European silverware. Therefore, her award recognises a lasting impact on Polish women’s handball. In addition, her international record includes a fourth place at the 2015 World Championship.
The awards ceremony will follow the medal matches on Friday, 22 May. Therefore, fans in Lublin can expect a high-profile club celebration. In addition, the nominations highlight the city’s role in Polish handball development. Consequently, expatriates should see the matches as cultural events and community gatherings.
