Students Decide How to Spend School Money

Lublin grants 5,000 PLN per institution so students run school budgets and shape their learning spaces.

Lublin has opened the sixth edition of a civic program that lets students decide local school projects. Consequently, the city will award 5,000 PLN to each qualifying institution under its school budgets scheme.

How the school budgets work in Lublin

The contest covers schools, bursaries and youth cultural centres. Moreover, institutions may apply between 14 and 29 April 2026. In addition, the city hosts an online briefing on 16 April at 13:00 on Zoom. Therefore, interested teams can get practical advice before they file applications.

From idea to delivery

Students propose projects. Then they promote ideas and hold votes. Also, teachers and parents take part in the process. Consequently, the program becomes a hands-on civic lesson. Previously, 97 school communities took part. Moreover, they implemented 179 initiatives. For example, funds paid for new classroom layouts, gym equipment and school gardens. In addition, projects strengthened cooperation in each institution. Therefore, the program builds social skills as well as infrastructure.

Process changes and support for schools

City officials adjusted the timetable to match the school year. Moreover, they cut reporting requirements. Therefore, schools face fewer administrative burdens. Also, the Lubelskie Centrum Ekonomiczno-Administracyjne Oświaty will help with finances. Consequently, staff can focus on running projects. In addition, the move reflects wider European interest in youth participation.

Benefits for students and the community

The mayor notes the program gives young people real influence. Moreover, it helps students learn planning, teamwork and responsibility. Therefore, participants gain practical democratic experience. Also, such projects can change school life quickly. For example, a small garden can become a shared meeting place. Consequently, the investments often pay social dividends as well as material ones.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you are an expat, you can still engage with local schools. First, contact your child’s principal or the school council and ask how to join a project team. In addition, many Polish public procedures use an electronic delivery system at the City Office (this often involves services such as ePUAP or a trusted profile). Also, note basic Polish terms: PESEL is the national ID number (used for official records), ZUS is the Social Insurance Institution (it handles pensions and contributions), and NFZ is the National Health Fund (it manages public health insurance). Finally, a “bursa” means a student dormitory, and a “młodzieżowy dom kultury” is a youth cultural centre. Therefore, clarify language needs early and ask schools about translation support.

Consequently, the sixth edition returns the chance for Lublin’s youth to shape their schools. Moreover, the reduced bureaucracy should speed project delivery. Therefore, expat families and staff should consider joining the process now.
