Stolen fire extinguisher recovered; wanted man arrested

Municipal guards recovered a stolen fire extinguisher on Praga-Południe and arrested a wanted man. Learn what this means for expats.

Municipal guards detained a man who had taken a stolen fire extinguisher from a petrol station on Chodakowska Street. Consequently, the incident ended with recovered property and the arrest of a person wanted by the police.

Recovered stolen fire extinguisher and arrest

The event took place on Thursday, 18 June 2026 in Praga-Południe. Moreover, guards from the VII District noticed a man leaving the station. He acted nervously and hid something under his clothing. Therefore, the uniformed officers approached him. However, the man tried to walk away toward Mińska Street. The guards intercepted him there. In addition, they used legal restraint techniques. They also applied handcuffs when he ignored orders. After they returned him to the station, staff confirmed the theft. The extinguisher’s value stood at 54.99 zł. Meanwhile, officers found a glass pipe with burnt plant residue on the suspect. Consequently, they called a police patrol and secured the item for tests.

Municipal guards, police action and penalties

Municipal guards, or straż miejska, enforce local rules and patrol city districts. In addition, they can detain people for minor offences. They also may use proportionate force when needed. The guards issued a mandat (on-the-spot fine) for the theft. Moreover, patrol checks in police systems revealed a different issue. The 34-year-old man from Biała Podlaska was wanted to serve a custodial sentence. Therefore, officers from the police took him into custody. They transported him to Komenda Rejonowa Policji Warszawa VII. Finally, the case moved to the competent services handling wanted persons.

Why this matters for expats

Petty thefts can seem minor due to low values. However, consequences can escalate if a person is wanted by courts. In addition, being detained affects residency paperwork and travel plans. For example, a warrant may trigger imprisonment until authorities resolve the case. Moreover, a fine or court process may require legal help. Expats should also know local terms. A PESEL (national ID number) matters for many processes. Likewise, ZUS (social security) and NFZ (public health insurer) show how institutions operate here. Therefore, understanding local enforcement can save time and stress.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: Municipal guards (straż miejska) handle local order and minor offences, while the police handle criminal cases. If stopped, present your ID or residence card. A mandat is an on-the-spot fine and you can contest it in court. If police detain you because you are wanted, contact your embassy and a lawyer. Keep your PESEL (national ID number) or residence documents handy. ZUS is social security and NFZ runs public health insurance. Finally, do not resist detention and always ask for the officer’s badge number.
