Smoke and CO Detectors: New Poland Rule by 2030
New rule makes smoke detector requirement Poland mandatory for most homes by Jan 1, 2030, while short-term rentals comply now.
The government added a new safety rule on November 21, 2024, that will reach every home by 1 January 2030. The smoke detector requirement Poland affects owners, landlords and short-term hosts.
What the smoke detector requirement Poland means for owners
The rule appears in fire safety regulations. Consequently, authorities now require autonomous smoke alarms in flats. Moreover, properties that burn fuel must also have carbon monoxide sensors. However, the law phases in over years. Therefore, some owners must act immediately.
Three stages and who must install devices now
The government split the obligation into three stages. First, developers must supply alarms for homes completed after 23 December 2024. Second, hosts who let properties for short stays faced the deadline on 30 June 2026. In addition, the universal deadline for all remaining homes falls on 1 January 2030. Consequently, if you rent on Airbnb, you already had to comply by June 2026.
What devices meet the rules and where to buy them
The regulation demands certified gear. Autonomy requires compliance with PN-EN 14604 for smoke detectors. In addition, CO sensors must meet PN-EN 50291. Therefore, check the number on the casing or in the manual. Moreover, simple certified detectors cost from about 30 PLN. However, batteries and the device life matter. The manufacturers usually state about ten years of service. Consequently, a detector with a flat battery will not protect you in practice.
Where carbon monoxide alarms are required
The rule links CO sensors to places with combustion. That covers gas boilers, stoves, fireplaces and solid-fuel appliances. However, experts disagree on closed-chamber condensing boilers and standard gas cookers. Therefore, many owners install a CO alarm anyway. In addition, the device cost stays low and peace of mind increases.
Exceptions, enforcement and insurance risks
If your flat already connects to a central fire alarm system, you may not need an autonomous detector. In practice, modern developer blocks sometimes use such central systems. However, confirm this with your building manager or administrator. Moreover, inspectors from the State Fire Service conduct spot checks. Importantly, insurers may reduce or deny payouts after fires if you lack required detectors. Therefore, the financial risk exceeds the purchase price.
Start by identifying which group your property belongs to. Consequently, act if you host short-term guests. However, if you live in the flat yourself, you have until 2030. In addition, buying a certified detector now costs little. Therefore, many owners decide to install devices early.
