Ruska Street to Gain Nearly 30 Trees and 700 Shrubs

Wroclaw plans to make Ruska Street green with 28 trees and over 700 shrubs, improving walking and cycling in the city centre.

Wrocław has launched a tender to rebuild the core stretch of Ruska Street. Moreover, the plan will make Ruska Street green as officials promise 28 trees and more than 700 shrubs and climbers to revive the historic route.

Ruska Street green: What will change

Wrocławskie Inwestycje invites contractors to rebuild 160 metres of Ruska Street. Consequently, the work covers the road and the square at Kazimierza Wielkiego. In addition, the project includes new surfaces and small architectural elements. Furthermore, the plan adds seating, bike racks, and decorative lighting. Also, the design removes many current barriers. Therefore, the street will level sidewalks and carriageway for better access.

Design and planting details

The city plans to plant 28 trees along the stretch. Moreover, planners chose field maples and small-leaved lindens. In addition, the works will install 724 shrubs and climbers. Furthermore, they will add more than 1,500 perennials and bulb plants. Also, the project creates special habitats for plants. Consequently, crews will use root-friendly systems to support long-term growth. Therefore, the trees should withstand soil compaction in the city centre.

Why the project matters to residents and visitors

Wroclaw’s historic centre will get a greener look. Moreover, the upgrade will improve microclimate in summer. Consequently, shaded pavements can lower local temperatures. In addition, the renovation will favour pedestrians and cyclists. Therefore, expect more comfortable walking routes and safer cycling. Also, the change may boost nearby shops and cafes. Furthermore, tourists will find the street more pleasant during visits.

Timing, costs and who runs the work

Wrocławskie Inwestycje runs the tender. Moreover, the firm oversees many city upgrades. Consequently, bidders must meet technical and environmental standards. However, the authority has not published the final budget yet. In addition, work in the busy centre will require staged closures. Therefore, the city will likely announce traffic plans before construction starts.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live in Poland as an expat, you should expect occasional works in historic centres. Moreover, keeping a PESEL number (national ID) helps with permits and local services. Also, ZUS is the social insurance office and NFZ runs public healthcare. Furthermore, the Polish word for a traffic fine is “mandat” and you must pay it promptly to avoid extra fees. Therefore, register for local updates from the municipality to get construction notices in advance.
