Praga-North Detectives Detain Tram Shooter Suspect

Praga-North detectives report a tram shooter arrested after damage to a Warsaw tram; suspect faces up to five years and Tramwaje Warszawskie seeks recovery.

Praga North detectives have said a tram shooter arrested after a glass panel on a tram shattered near Dworzec Wileński. Consequently, police identified and detained a 22-year-old suspect in Wołomin county.

What happened on Praga-Północ

On 27 February, a tram driver on line 13 heard a sudden hit. Moreover, the driver saw a spiderweb crack form on a front side window. However, neither the driver nor passengers saw anyone near the tram. Therefore, patrol officers called forensic teams to inspect the vehicle.

Investigators collected witness statements on site. In addition, a representative of Tramwaje Warszawskie filed a formal report. Consequently, criminal detectives ran operational checks and reviewed the evidence. They then focused on a repeat offender with past criminal notes.

tram shooter arrested: charges and investigation

Police arrested the 22-year-old in Wołomin county days after the shooting. Moreover, he admitted during questioning. He said he fired an airgun accidentally. However, he then panicked and threw the weapon into a trash bin.

Investigators charge him with exposing passengers and the driver to direct danger. In addition, they charge him with property damage exceeding 10,000 zł. Therefore, the man faces up to five years in prison if convicted. The district prosecutor in Warsaw-Praga Północ now oversees the case.

Why this matters for Warsaw residents and commuters

The incident highlights urban safety vulnerabilities. Moreover, trams carry many people in close quarters. Therefore, a single projectile can cause serious injury. In addition, damage to tram windows can disrupt service and force costly repairs. Consequently, Tramwaje Warszawskie must recoup losses and maintain public trust.

For residents, police work shows how local units coordinate. Moreover, criminal teams, patrol units, and prosecutors collaborate closely. Therefore, investigators can follow leads and recover evidence quickly. However, lone incidents still raise public concern about stray projectiles and airguns in cities.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you are an expat in Warsaw, report suspicious behaviour immediately by calling 112 or 997. In Poland, police handle criminal investigations and the public prosecutor (prokuratura) leads prosecutions. A criminal record can affect background checks and employment. Also, know local terms: a “mandat” means a fine, “PESEL” is the national ID number, “ZUS” covers social security, and “NFZ” is the national health fund. Therefore, keep documents and witness statements safe. Moreover, contact your embassy if you need legal help. In addition, Tramwaje Warszawskie runs tram services and may seek civil damages for repairs.

Police emphasise community vigilance. Moreover, CCTV and witness recollections usually help solve such cases. Therefore, commuters should report damage and suspicious persons. Finally, prosecutors will decide whether to seek prison time or alternate sanctions in court.
