Mazovia Leads: 120k Use Widow’s Pension

Mazovia tops Poland with 120,700 beneficiaries of the widow’s pension Mazovia, signaling bigger social payments and rules changes from 2027.

Mazovia now leads Poland in the number of people claiming the widow’s pension Mazovia. The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) reports more than 120,700 beneficiaries in the region, and the figure keeps rising. Consequently, local payouts in May totaled PLN 471.4 million.

How many people receive the benefit and what they get

ZUS counted an average of 988,800 recipients nationwide in May 2026. Moreover, Mazovia topped the list with over 120,700 claimants. The Silesian and Greater Poland voivodeships followed. The average widow’s pension in Mazovia reached PLN 3,907.48 per month. Therefore, the region now absorbs a significant share of national survivor payments.

What the widow’s pension means in practice

The renta wdowia is not a separate benefit. Instead, it lets survivors combine their own pension or disability payment with the deceased spouse’s survivor pension. Currently, people may take 100 percent of one pension and 15 percent of the other. However, from 1 January 2027, ZUS will increase the second share from 15 percent to 25 percent. Consequently, many beneficiaries will see higher monthly income after that date. In addition, ZUS enforces a cap. The total pay cannot exceed three times the minimum pension. At the moment, that cap equals PLN 5,935.47 gross. If sums exceed the cap, ZUS reduces payments accordingly.

Who can claim and how it affects foreigners

ZUS reminds applicants they can apply at any time. Women must be at least 60 years old. Men must be at least 65. Claimants must have remained married until the spouse’s death. Moreover, they must not remarry. The right to a survivor pension must arise no earlier than after a woman turns 55 or a man turns 60. Therefore, age and timing rules matter a lot. For foreigners married to a Polish contributor, bilateral social security treaties may affect entitlements. Consequently, expats should check rules that link Polish pensions with benefits abroad.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you are an expat married to a Polish contributor, save copies of marriage and death certificates. You will need them to claim from ZUS. Also register for a PESEL number if you plan to live long term in Poland. In addition, open a ZUS PUE account to apply online. Finally, contact ZUS about treaty rules if you lived or worked abroad.

Why this matters for residents and the local economy

The scale of payments shows shifting demographics in Mazovia. Many retirees and survivors rely on stable incomes. Moreover, large payouts affect household spending. Consequently, the local economy may feel changes when benefit levels rise in 2027. However, the cap may limit increases for higher earners. Therefore, individuals should estimate net effects before making financial plans.

ZUS continues to report growing interest in the scheme. In addition, the institution urges potential claimants to confirm eligibility and submit documentation early. You can apply at a ZUS office or via the PUE ZUS online service. Moreover, legal advice helps when international rules apply.
