A man accused of parcel theft from courier was arrested two hours after stealing packages in Łęczna. Police recovered the goods and found drugs.
One man stole a bag of deliveries at a Łęczna parcel locker, and police arrested him two hours later. The incident involved parcel theft from courier services and left a courier shaken but able to help police identify the suspect.
Parcel theft from courier: swift police response
The theft happened on Tuesday around 13:00 near a paczkomat in Łęczna. A courier parked his van and began unloading parcels to put them into lockers. Meanwhile a man sitting on a bench watched. Then he approached the vehicle and grabbed a bag with more than a dozen packages. He also took a mobile computer worth over 7,000 zł.
The courier tried to stop him. However the thief threatened to beat him and ran away. Fortunately the courier recorded the thief’s silhouette on his phone. Consequently local criminal police launched a search immediately. Moreover officers checked nearby streets and analysed information from witnesses.
How police tracked the suspect
Police traced a man matching the description less than two hours after the report. He came from Łęczna and he was 36 years old. Therefore officers arrested him and searched his flat. In addition they found drugs hidden in a sleeve. The police seized more than 110 grams of marijuana and mephedrone.
Officers also recovered the stolen parcels and the computer. The suspect had hidden the items under wooden pallets close to where the theft happened. The parcels remained intact and returned to the courier company. However the computer suffered damage.
Charges, detention and wider concerns
Prosecutors charged the man with robbery and possession of significant amounts of drugs. The court placed him in temporary detention for three months. In addition investigators say he acted in recidivism (recydywa). Consequently he faces up to 15 years in prison. Moreover police suspect he may have committed other crimes. They link him to a break-in at an outbuilding and to damage to two vehicles.
