Nearly 230 Warsaw stores offer cashback at checkout

Warsaw now has almost 230 Biedronka and Lidl points offering cashback at supermarkets; know the limits and rules before relying on them.

Finding an ATM in a city with fewer machines makes little sense. In Warsaw you can now reach almost 230 locations where Biedronka and Lidl will give you cash at the checkout through cashback at supermarkets.

How the two chains differ

Biedronka now advertises the service in all its stores nationwide. Moreover, it offers the option for Visa and Mastercard cards. However, you must buy at least 1 zł. In addition, Biedronka limits cash to multiples of 50 zł. Therefore the single withdrawal cap stands at 300 zł. Also, the cashier must enter your PIN at a staffed till. Consequently, self-checkouts do not support the service. The chain does not charge a fee. However, your bank may add one.

cashback at supermarkets in Lidl: a new option

Lidl rolled out cashback in May 2026. Moreover, the chain allows Visa and Mastercard withdrawals up to 1,000 zł in a single transaction. However, Lidl has no requirement to round amounts to 50 zł. In addition, Lidl does not use self-checkouts, so the restriction on those tills does not apply. Nevertheless, Lidl has not yet issued a full public rollout statement. Therefore availability varies by store. Consequently, ask the cashier before you proceed.

Why Warsaw matters

Warsaw hosts the largest concentration of both chains. In fact, you will find about 177 Biedronkas and roughly 48 Lidls here. Moreover, stores appear across all districts from Praga to Wilanów. Therefore expats who live or work in the capital often can avoid a separate ATM trip. However, you should not treat supermarket cashback as a full ATM replacement for large sums.

For example, Lidl may refuse cash if the cashier lacks enough banknotes. Also, stores may stop withdrawals late in the day. In addition, banks sometimes treat cashback as an out-of-network cash withdrawal and charge a fee. Consequently, check your bank’s price list before relying on the service.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you are an expat, learn a few Polish terms. ZUS means the national social insurance office. NFZ stands for the National Health Fund that runs public health care. PESEL is your national ID number. Moreover, always tell the cashier you want cash before authorising payment. In addition, carry a PIN for your card because both chains require it even for contactless phone payments.

Practical tips help you plan withdrawals. First, state your cash request before the terminal authorises payment. Second, split a withdrawal in two transactions if you need amounts not divisible by 50 zł at Biedronka. Third, call ahead to confirm Lidl availability in a specific store. Finally, keep a backup plan like an app that locates ATMs.
