Artist killed in Biala Podlaska shooting

A Russian artist died in the Biala Podlaska shooting; prosecutors name the victim and detail the investigation.

A prominent Russian artist died after a street shooting in eastern Poland. The Biala Podlaska shooting left the victim dead on Monday morning, prosecutors said.

Investigation updates

Prosecutors from Lublin named the victim as Robert K., known publicly as Siemion Skriepiecki. Moreover, they said he had criticised the Russian government and took part in anti-war art actions. Consequently, investigators described the attack as deliberate. They said a man approached the victim on a sidewalk and fired three shots. Then, when the victim fell, the attacker fired two more shots at close range. Furthermore, the post-mortem found five entry wounds and two exit wounds in the head and upper chest.

Police secured CCTV footage and witness statements. In addition, officers collected forensic traces from the scene. However, the suspected shooter remains at large. Therefore, the regional police chief set up a special investigative team. Meanwhile, the country’s internal security agency ABW (the Internal Security Agency, which handles counterintelligence and serious threats) works closely with prosecutors. As a result, authorities treat the case as high priority.

Biala Podlaska shooting: suspects and diplomatic angle

Investigators arrested two Belarusian nationals near the Belarusian consulate in Biała Podlaska. However, prosecutors have not charged them yet. Consequently, detectives are establishing whether those men link to the killing. Moreover, the detention near the consulate raises sensitive questions about possible cross-border involvement. Therefore, some observers speculate about state-sponsored action by Minsk or Moscow. However, officials warn that such claims remain hypotheses, not proven facts.

Analysts note the victim’s public profile. He campaigned against the Kremlin and performed protest art in Europe. Furthermore, activists knew him for outspoken positions on the war in Ukraine. Consequently, the motive could relate to his politics. However, investigators keep all scenarios open while they follow evidence.

What this means for residents and visitors

The suspect may still be armed, police say. Therefore, residents should avoid confrontations and call emergency number 112. In addition, local police asked drivers who passed Królowej Jadwigi Street between 8:30 and 10:30 on Monday to share dashcam footage. Furthermore, witnesses can call the Biała Podlaska Police at 47 814-12-10. As a precaution, detectives accept anonymous tips to protect informants.

For foreigners, the case underlines how regional incidents can raise diplomatic tensions. In addition, local authorities will likely increase visible security near consular sites. Moreover, consulates can help nationals with information and safe return plans. Therefore, contact your embassy if you feel unsafe. Note that in Poland many public services use identifiers such as PESEL (national ID number). Also, social benefits come via ZUS (Social Insurance Institution) and health care through NFZ (National Health Fund). These are distinct from police duties, but they matter if you need practical help while staying in Poland.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live or travel near Biała Podlaska, report suspicious people to 112 immediately. Moreover, consulates often provide advice and assistance. In addition, keep copies of your passport and PESEL (if you have one). Finally, remember that Polish police take anonymous tips and ABW handles security threats.
