Train passengers should prepare for delays as a train drivers’ protest may slow services nationwide on Sept 11; carriers plan buses and ticket flexibility.

Train services across Poland may face major disruption on Friday, September 11, as a train drivers’ protest could slow or delay journeys nationwide. The union calls for trains to limit speed to 20 km/h at every level crossing for a full day.

The action targets all level crossings. Consequently, even trains that start on time can pile up delays along routes. Moreover, the slowdown applies to both guarded and unguarded crossings. train drivers’ protest: trigger, demands and timing

The union launched the protest after a deadly accident in Sokolniki Suchy on September 9. A truck struck an Intercity train and caused a derailment. Consequently one passenger died and several people suffered injuries. The union leader Leszek Miętek said drivers have repeatedly raised safety concerns. Moreover he accused authorities of not improving crossing safety fast enough. The union demands better protections at level crossings. Therefore the action asks drivers to reduce speed to 20 km/h at each crossing for 24 hours on September 11.

How carriers plan to limit disruption

PKP Intercity published contingency measures to ease the impact. For example, the carrier will deploy replacement buses where trains cannot run. Furthermore PKP will station mobile information staff at major hubs. They will appear at Warsaw Central, Warsaw West, Warsaw East, Gdańsk Główny, Gdynia Główna, Szczecin, Katowice, Kraków Główny, Zakopane, Poznań Główny and Wrocław Główny. In addition, carriers will mutually accept each other’s passenger tickets for that day. However the rule excludes EIP Pendolino services. PKP Intercity also allows refunds without charges for tickets valid on September 11, 2026. Therefore passengers who cancel due to the protest will receive full refunds.
