Hundreds of Polish schools switch to remote learning
Winter 2026 tested Poland’s remote learning rollout; hundreds of schools switched online while equipment deliveries continued.
The harsh winter of 2026 tested Poland’s remote learning rollout as ice closed roads. Consequently, hundreds of schools in four provinces switched to online classes under clear rules.
remote learning rollout: what happened this winter
Freezing rain and black ice forced closures in Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Lubuskie, Wielkopolskie and Zachodniopomorskie. Moreover, heavy transport disruption made safe travel impossible. Therefore school directors invoked article 125a of the Education Law. That rule requires remote lessons after two full days of closure. Consequently directors must start distance education by the third day. However not every school had the right equipment yet. The National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO) funds the response. NASK ran the national procurement in September 2025. The contract selected ten providers to deliver kits to schools.
What the kits contain and why they matter
Each kit costs a small fraction of the total investment. In total the project costs 122272744 zł under KPO. Each of the 100000 kits includes six devices designed for teaching. The bundle contains a graphic tablet for handwritten notes and drawings. Moreover the bundle includes a professional microphone and a station. In addition a camera on a tripod shows experiments and board work. Also a headset and a USB hub complete the set for plug-and-play use. The equipment makes lessons clearer for remote pupils. Therefore teachers can run hybrid lessons with fewer technical problems. NASK designed the kits to work immediately after unboxing. Consequently teachers need minimal IT support to begin lessons.
Distribution, priorities and limits
The Ministry of Education published the beneficiary list publicly. Therefore parents and school leaders can check allocations online. A school can receive kits for up to half of its classrooms. However each school can accept only one advanced lab project. Each institution chooses either an AI lab or a STEM lab. The AI labs receive larger funding under a separate scheme. In addition the government buys hundreds of thousands of laptops for pupils. Teachers also received vouchers to buy devices for teaching. Consequently wealthier urban schools no longer hold a consistent advantage. Small rural schools gain identical kits to urban counterparts.
Rules, safety and what parents should do
The law leaves no room for discretionary closure decisions. If temperatures fall below legal thresholds, directors must act. In addition any serious hazard to student safety triggers the process. Therefore parents should ask local schools about remote lesson readiness. Ask whether the school tested the new equipment in a trial run. Moreover check whether the classroom internet supports live streams. For expats remember to share your contact details if needed. Also consider registering PESEL (the Polish national ID number) if appropriate for faster school administration.
