Central Katowice Underpass Gets Lift and Brighter Lights

Katowice underpass renovation will add an elevator and new lighting, improving accessibility and safety while the tunnel stays closed until 2028.

Major works began on 9 July 2026 to rebuild the pedestrian underpass linking Tylnia Mariacka and Wojewódzka streets. The Katowice underpass renovation will install a lift and new bright lighting, and the tunnel will remain closed for an extended period.

What is changing on site

Workers closed the tunnel under the tracks for heavy reconstruction. Consequently, engineers will replace fixtures and restructure stair access. Moreover, the side toward Wojewódzka will gain an elevator. Therefore seniors, people with reduced mobility, and parents with strollers will access the tunnel more easily. In addition, technicians will install new lighting to eliminate dark corners. However, the portal on Tylnia Mariacka will keep its historical look. The portal stands near the old station building and ties into the main platform at Katowice station.

How the closure affects daily travel

Commuters must use alternate crossings until work ends. For example, people can cross at św. Jana or Francuska streets. Consequently, some trips will take longer. Moreover, local trams and buses may absorb extra foot traffic. Therefore plan extra time for journeys across the tracks. In addition, signage will guide pedestrians around the site. Nonetheless, the contractor expects the benefits to outweigh the short-term disruption.

Katowice underpass renovation and the bigger rail plan

This work forms part of a large PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe programme across Katowice. Consequently, crews will rebuild or construct about 140 engineering structures. Moreover, the project will add new tracks to separate local commuter traffic from long-distance services. As a result, the rail node will increase capacity and allow more frequent trains. In addition, planners aim to add roughly 100 kilometres of new track between Szopienice and Piotrowice. Therefore the city will gain a more reliable network for both regional and long-haul services.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live or work near central Katowice expect longer crossings until mid-2028. In Poland you will often meet institutions with short names. For example PESEL (the national ID number), ZUS (social insurance office), and NFZ (public health insurer). Also remember that a mandat (a fine) can apply for ignoring safety signs. Therefore carry ID when you move around construction zones. In addition, check train times and regional apps for updated platforms, since PKP PLK modifies timetables during major work. Finally, contact your landlord or employer about alternate routes, and ask local staff if you need step-free access.

Finish of the reconstruction stands scheduled for the second quarter of 2028. Consequently, residents and visitors should treat the underpass as closed until then. Moreover, the wider rail modernisation will transform transport in the Silesian region for years.
