Patrols found two men on a local bridge. One man held the other from behind by the neck. However, the aggressive man discarded the object when police approached. Then he kicked it toward the water. Consequently, officers called divers from the Samodzielny Pododdział Kontrterrorystyczny Policji in Lublin. The diving unit searched the riverbed and retrieved an item resembling a firearm. The arrested man, a Poniatowa resident, had nearly two promile of alcohol on his breath. Therefore, medics and police noted his intoxication at the scene.

Charges and immediate legal steps

The 28-year-old faces charges for making criminal threats and for coercing people to act. Moreover, prosecutors say these offenses can carry up to three years in prison. The local court in Opole Lubelskie agreed with police and prosecutors. Therefore, the judge ordered temporary arrest for three months. However, the pre-trial measure does not equal a sentence. The court will continue the criminal procedure while he remains in custody.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you witness a crime in Poland call 112 for emergencies. In addition, 997 reaches the police directly in non-EU emergencies. Remember that a PESEL is the Polish national identification number. Moreover, a “mandat” means a fine. Also, ZUS is the social insurance institution, and NFZ handles public health insurance. Finally, carrying or pointing items that look like weapons can lead police to arrest you, even if the item is a replica.

Why this matters for expats

Small towns like Poniatowa usually see fewer violent incidents than big cities. However, aggressive acts can disrupt daily life quickly. Therefore, expats should know how police respond. For instance, Poland deploys specialized units for hazardous searches. Moreover, courts can impose pre-trial detention swiftly when public safety seems at risk. Consequently, anyone involved in or witnessing such events should cooperate calmly with officers. Also, carry an ID when you go out. In addition, keep emergency numbers saved on your phone.

The case highlights how intoxication can worsen outcomes. Therefore, public disorder and threats attract immediate criminal and judicial attention. Moreover, local media and police share updates to keep communities safe. However, courts will still review evidence before delivering verdicts. In addition, legal assistance matters if you face police action while living here.
