How Lublin’s universities fared in the 2022–2025 evaluation

Lublin university evaluation shows gains for KUL, UMCS and medical schools and affects funding and doctoral rights.

The Ministry of Science and Higher Education finished the 2022–2025 Lublin university evaluation across disciplines. Consequently, the results will shape budgets, doctoral rights and international collaborations in the city.

Lublin university evaluation: headline results

The ministry issued over 1,200 decisions for scientific categories. Moreover, 40 percent of decisions placed units in categories A+ or A. However, the most common result nationwide remained B+. Therefore, the evaluation ranks units by five categories: A+, A, B+, B and C.

At Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) authorities submitted 16 disciplines. Consequently, 12 disciplines won top categories A+ or A. Moreover, KUL scored A+ in literature studies, theology, sociology, biblical studies and canon law. Therefore, the rector says the university now ranks among Poland’s best centers.

Furthermore, KUL moved several areas up into category A. These include political science and administration, psychology, medical biology, arts studies, linguistics, history and philosophy. However, KUL lists economics, biological sciences, law and pedagogy in B+.

UMCS, Medical and Technical schools — local shifts

Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej (UMCS) entered the results with 24 disciplines. Moreover, ten of them earned category A. In addition, history won A+ and placed UMCS among only three Polish universities with that ranking.

Therefore, UMCS plans a detailed review. Moreover, the university may file appeals where it sees underassessment. Consequently, the institution hopes to better reflect its research potential.

The Medical University of Lublin improved in pharmacy. Consequently, pharmacy rose from B+ to A+. Moreover, health sciences moved up to A. However, medical sciences kept B+. Therefore, the medical school will likely win more research grants.

Politechnika Lubelska kept a strong position. In fact, six of seven assessed disciplines earned category A. In addition, architecture and urban planning scored B+. The University of Life Sciences won three A categories in mechanical engineering, agriculture and food technology.

What these categories mean for institutions and researchers

Categories determine more than prestige. Moreover, they influence the right to run doctoral schools and to grant academic degrees. Therefore, higher categories unlock access to state funding and to competitive research programmes.

Consequently, units with A+ can compete more effectively for EU and national projects. In addition, international partners often regard the category as a signal of quality. Therefore, researchers and foreign students may consider these rankings when choosing collaborations or PhD programmes.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you plan to work or study at a Lublin university, verify how the evaluation affects the programme you join. For example, A+ and A status can allow a unit to run doctoral schools and to award PhDs. Moreover, higher categories usually mean more research funding and more stable contracts. Also, prepare basic Polish paperwork early. You may need a PESEL number for formal hiring and payroll. In addition, employers register social insurance with ZUS and healthcare with NFZ. Finally, contact the university’s international office for help with contracts, visas and appeals.
