From Sept 1 ZUS Lowers Income Limits for Some Pensioners
ZUS income limits drop from Sept 1, 2026, affecting early retirees who work. Check the new thresholds and steps to avoid benefit cuts.
From September 1, 2026 the ZUS income limits change and some early retirees who work may receive lower payments. Consequently, this change does not create a new tax but alters earnings thresholds for specific pensioners.
ZUS income limits and the new numbers
The Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported an average wage of 9,233.13 PLN in Q2 2026. Therefore, ZUS recalculated thresholds linked to that figure. From September the safe monthly gross ceiling will be 6,463.20 PLN. Moreover, the second threshold that can trigger suspension will drop to 12,003.10 PLN.
What these thresholds mean in practice
If your gross monthly income stays at or below 6,463.20 PLN ZUS will not cut your benefit. However, if earnings exceed that level ZUS can reduce the payment. In addition, if earnings exceed 12,003.10 PLN ZUS may suspend the benefit completely. For context, the current first threshold equals 6,694.10 PLN. Therefore, many workers will enter the reduction zone without any pay rise.
How much can ZUS cut your pension
ZUS will reduce payments proportionally when earnings sit between the two limits. Also, rules cap the maximum reduction for different benefits. For a standard retirement pension and total disability pension the cap equals 989.41 PLN. Moreover, partial disability pension caps at 742.10 PLN. In addition, a single-person survivor pension carries a cap of 841.05 PLN. For example, a monthly gross salary of 7,000 PLN will exceed the first limit by 536.80 PLN. Consequently, ZUS may lower the benefit by an amount tied to that excess, subject to caps.
Importantly, people who reached the statutory retirement age need not worry. In Poland statutory age equals 60 years for women and 65 years for men. Therefore, standard pensions after reaching that age face no automatic limits from these thresholds.
Why did ZUS lower thresholds now? GUS published a lower average wage for Q2 than for Q1. Consequently, the formula that ties thresholds to the national average produced smaller ceilings. Therefore, the regulation reacts to statistical changes, not political discretion.
What should you do next? First, calculate your typical gross monthly income and include bonuses and additional pay. Second, if you hover near 6,463.20 PLN or 12,003.10 PLN, plan adjustments now. Third, consult ZUS or a payroll specialist to confirm which earnings ZUS counts. Finally, document communications and keep pay slips handy when you talk to the institution.
For many expats the rule will feel technical. However, it can affect monthly cash flow. Consequently, check your payslips before September and act if necessary.
