From Sept 1: ZUS income limits tightened for some pensioners
From Sept 1, 2026 ZUS income limits drop, changing payouts for some pensioners. Check thresholds 6463.20 PLN and 12,003.10 PLN.
From 1 September 2026 Poland’s Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) will lower thresholds that affect some working pensioners. ZUS income limits will fall because average wages for Q2 2026 dropped, and the new values apply until 30 November.
ZUS income limits: what changes from 1 September
Consequently, the first cap equals 70 percent of the average monthly wage. Therefore from 1 September it will be 6,463.20 PLN gross. Moreover, the previous cap stood at 6,694.10 PLN gross. In addition, the second cap equals 130 percent of the average wage. Thus that limit falls to 12,003.10 PLN gross. However, the previous top limit was 12,431.80 PLN. Therefore both thresholds fall markedly for the coming quarter.
Who will feel the impact
In short, the change mainly affects people who draw pensions or certain disability benefits and still work. Moreover, it affects mainly those who did not reach the statutory retirement age. Consequently early pensioners and some pensioners on special rules should pay attention. If monthly gross earnings lie between the two limits, ZUS may reduce the benefit. However, if earnings exceed the top limit, ZUS may suspend the payment for that period. In addition, the law caps how much the institution can cut. For full pensions and disability pensions the maximum reduction currently equals 989.41 PLN. Therefore the effect differs by benefit type and by income amount.
Practical example and timing
For example, imagine a person with a monthly gross pay of 6,600 PLN. In August they stood below the first threshold. However, from September that same pay sits above the new cap by 136.80 PLN. Consequently their pension may face a reduction. In addition, ZUS updates these values every three months. Therefore the September figures apply from 1 September to 30 November 2026. Moreover, new figures will appear in December. Thus people who earn close to the old limits must check regularly.
Age, rules and special cases
Importantly, people who reached the statutory retirement age do not normally face these limits. Currently the standard pension age stands at 60 years for women and 65 years for men. However, specific benefits or special rules may still carry limits. Therefore beneficiaries of certain disability pensions or special pensions should verify their case. Also the cutoff date for reaching retirement age matters. Consequently someone turning 60 or 65 soon should plan carefully.
