Elderly Woman Loses Cash and Jewelry in Rzeszów Scam

An 86-year-old lost 15,000 zł and jewelry in a grandparent scam Rzeszow; police arrested a 20-year-old the same night.

An 86-year-old Rzeszów resident handed over 12,000 zł and gold jewelry after a phone call. Consequently she fell victim to a grandparent scam Rzeszow and reported the loss to police that evening.

Incident details

The woman phoned the police after 9.30 pm. Moreover she told officers that a man had called earlier. He claimed to be her grandson. The caller said he caused a serious car crash. Therefore he said he urgently needed money for bail. The senior left a bag with 12,000 zł on her doorstep. In addition she put gold rings, chains and a medal into the bag. As a result she lost more than 15,000 zł in value. Police later confirmed the jewelry matched the victim’s description.

Grandparent scam Rzeszow: how it happened

Scammers often use emotional pressure in this scheme. They pose as relatives and invent crises. Consequently victims face a rushed decision. Moreover callers ask for cash transfers or doorstep handovers. In this case the fraudster sent a young man to collect the bag. The suspect wore no disguise. However he left before the victim realised the truth. Thus the method remains effective, especially for older residents.

Police response and arrest

Officers from Rzeszów and Dębica worked together. They traced a suspect to Dębica within hours. Consequently local detectives arrested a 20-year-old before midnight. They found significant cash and jewelry on him. The victim later identified the items. Prosecutors charged the man with causing the elderly woman to part with property above 15,000 zł. Therefore a court ordered three months of preventive detention. Meanwhile the investigation continues.

Why this matters for expats

Fraud like this affects community safety and trust. Moreover it shows how criminals exploit personal ties. In addition the case highlights police coordination across districts. Foreign residents should therefore stay alert. Learn key Polish emergency numbers. Dial 112 for EU-wide emergency help, or 997 for direct police contact. Also keep family contacts updated and verify calls before sending money.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: In Poland scammers often impersonate relatives, police, or officials. Consequently always pause and check. Call the relative on a known number or ask a neighbour to verify. Moreover you can contact local police directly at 112 or 997. For residency matters remember basic institutions: ZUS handles social insurance, NFZ runs public health insurance, and PESEL denotes your national ID number. Therefore do not reveal personal data over unsolicited calls.
