Eight officers disciplined after Lublin jail escape

Eight prison officers disciplined after Lublin prison escape attempt; investigations continue into possible criminal liability.

Eight officers of the Polish Prison Service faced disciplinary action after the Lublin prison escape attempt on 24 October. Investigators still check whether any of them will face criminal charges.

Lublin prison escape attempt: what happened

Two remand prisoners sawed through the bars of a cell window. Consequently, they reached the roof and then the prison grounds. However, guards caught them only near the perimeter fence. In addition, officials sought answers about how the detainees obtained a saw blade. Moreover, authorities questioned why staff did not notice escape preparations earlier.

Disciplinary measures and internal review

Prison Service inspectors and prosecutors opened probes immediately. Four officers received formal reprimands. Two staff members earned warnings about reduced fitness for service. One officer received a warning about reduced fitness for the post. One officer moved to a lower-ranking role. In one case authorities chose not to impose a penalty. In addition, senior officers held instructional talks with staff after the incident. Therefore, management discussed the case during regional briefings and training sessions.

Ongoing criminal inquiries and procedural changes

The prosecutor filed charges in the main case about prisoners leaving custody without permission. One defendant accepted a one-year prison sentence. Meanwhile, the trial of the other prisoner continues. Prosecutors also opened two additional cases. One concerned delivery of the saw blade, but investigators dropped it. They could not identify the perpetrator. The other probe still examines possible negligence by prison staff. So far, nobody faces criminal charges in that file.

Prison authorities placed the escapees in a special supervision regime. This status means higher scrutiny in any facility where authorities transfer them. Consequently, the Prison Service tightened checks at the Lublin facility. In addition, they introduced extra security measures and stricter control procedures. Since October, the service recorded no similar escape attempts.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you have family or friends detained in Poland, expect the prison system to enforce strict rules. Polish prisons report to the Prison Service (Służba Więzienna). In addition, officials use a national ID called PESEL (a personal identification number) for records. Moreover, health care in custody ties into NFZ (the national health fund), while staff issues involve rules similar to public service employment, like ZUS social contributions for employees. Therefore, avoid bringing prohibited items to a visiting room. If authorities contact you about a detainee, ask for a clear contact point and any required documents. Finally, remember that a “mandat” means a fine in everyday Polish law, not necessarily a criminal conviction.

For expats, the case highlights the need to know who to call in an emergency. Therefore, note the local prosecutor’s office and police contacts in your area. Moreover, keep basic personal documents ready when you travel to detention facilities.
