Drones Over Hrubieszow Spark Communication Row

Drones over Hrubieszow alarmed residents; mayor criticised lack of prior notice while defence ministry said it informed authorities.

Drones over Hrubieszow appeared on Tuesday, May 19, sparking alarm among residents near the Ukrainian border. However, the mayor said the city received no prior notice, while defence officials later described the flights as planned exercises.

drones over Hrubieszow: what happened

Local residents reported unmanned aircraft over the town in the afternoon. Consequently, the municipal office received many worried calls. The mayor, Marta Majewska, said neither the City of Hrubieszow nor the Municipal Crisis Management Centre learned about the operation in advance. In addition, the county (starost) apparently knew because it received a letter from the Operational Command of the Armed Forces. However, the city did not receive that notice. The County Police told the city the military exercises involved air defence systems. Therefore, authorities stress the flights did not cross the Polish border.

Why this matters for residents and expats

Hrubieszow sits near Poland’s eastern border with Ukraine, and tensions remain high. Moreover, people in border towns react quickly to unusual military activity. Consequently, unclear communication can spread fear and enable misinformation. For expats, local administrative terms can confuse. For example, ZUS means the national social insurance office, NFZ runs public health care, a “mandat” is a fine, and PESEL is a national ID number. In addition, local crisis alerts normally flow through the RCB (Government Centre for Security) and county offices.

What authorities said and what comes next

The defence minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, said the military passed information to relevant bodies. Moreover, he noted that the RCB also received notices. The starost’s office published an afternoon bulletin confirming air defence drills that would continue until May 20. However, the city only issued communications after the military statement. The mayor sent a formal letter to the starost. She said the goal was not to escalate politics. Instead, she seeks clearer procedures and timely alerts for citizens. Also, social media showed frustration and calls for better local coordination.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live near the border, sign up for local emergency alerts and follow the county office and municipal pages. Register for SMS or email warnings where possible. Also, learn a few Polish administrative words (PESEL for ID, NFZ for public health, ZUS for social security). Keep copies of important documents, and contact your embassy if you feel unsafe. Report suspicious social media claims to verified local channels before sharing.
