DK73 Pilzno-Brzostek Road Upgrade Begins

The DK73 Pilzno Brzostek nine-kilometre stretch goes to tender for a long-awaited upgrade with new sidewalks, bridges and bus bays.

After almost a decade of waiting, authorities finally moved to rebuild DK73 Pilzno Brzostek. GDDKiA announced an EU tender for the more than nine-kilometre upgrade between Pilzno and Brzostek.

DK73 Pilzno Brzostek: What will change

The road carries almost 11,000 vehicles a day. Therefore, the route demands a modern upgrade. Moreover, the contractor will rebuild ten intersections. In addition, engineers must strengthen the pavement to carry 11.5 tonnes per axle. Consequently, the upgrade will improve safety for heavy trucks. Moreover, the project includes more than 13 kilometres of pedestrian and cycle paths. Therefore, cyclists will get safer space between villages. In addition, workers will install 17 bus bays. Consequently, buses will stop off the main lane more often. However, where towns lie close together, engineers will build a 3.5 metre multi-functional lane. Therefore, drivers will use it to turn left without blocking traffic. Moreover, where space allows, crews will add local service roads. However, the main carriageway will stay one lane per direction.

Zatoki, surfacing and local impact

The upgrade covers the municipalities of Pilzno and Brzostek. Therefore, the work affects Strzegocice, Bielowy, Jaworze Górne, Kamienica Dolna and Zawadka Brzostecka. Moreover, crews will resurface sections to modern axle standards. In addition, the project aims to reduce pollution from idling traffic. Consequently, local journeys will become smoother. However, roadworks will cause temporary detours. Therefore, drivers should expect delays during construction. Moreover, public transport users should check temporary stop locations. In addition, property access will change in some places.

Three rivers, three bridges

The road crosses three rivers on this stretch. Therefore, GDDKiA plans major bridge work. Moreover, the bridge over Slotowka in Bielowy fails current technical standards. Consequently, crews will demolish and replace that structure. However, the bridge in Jaworze Górne from 2008 remains in good condition. Therefore, contractors will not rebuild it. In addition, engineers will add a pedestrian and cycle footbridge beside it. Moreover, they will place a similar footbridge next to the 2011 Kamienica bridge in Kamienica Dolna. Therefore, pedestrians will cross rivers without using the main carriageway.

Part of a larger DK73 plan

The Pilzno to Brzostek upgrade forms one element of a bigger plan. Therefore, authorities plan upgrades from Pilzno to Jaslo. Moreover, the programme includes three bypasses. In addition, the Pilzno and Jaslo bypasses already moved into construction. However, the Brzostek and Kolaczyc bypass remains at tender stage. Consequently, the combined work will deliver around 35 kilometres of improved road. Moreover, two thirds of the new route will follow a new alignment.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you travel or live near this route expect changing bus stops and local access. Moreover, check public transport updates because 17 new bus bays will change timetables. In addition, short detours often affect local shops. For paperwork, remember some Polish terms. PESEL is the national ID number. NFZ is the public health insurer. ZRID is the planning and land-use decision that allows construction to start. Finally, a “mandat” means a traffic fine, and ZUS is the state social insurer.
