August 14 declared day off across Poland

The government set August 14 day off for the civil service, creating a long weekend. Check with your employer.

August 14 day off will be observed across Poland for the civil service. The Prime Minister issued a directive so many offices close on Friday, creating a three-day weekend.

Why August 14 day off? The legal mechanism explained

The rule comes from Article 130 §2 of the Labour Code. Consequently, any public holiday that falls on a non-Sunday reduces working time by eight hours. However, this year the national holiday on 15 August falls on Saturday. In addition, Saturday is already a non-working day for most five-day workers. Therefore the holiday would not reduce working time automatically. The Labour Code requires employers to compensate that lost eight hours during the current settlement period. As a result, the Prime Minister unified the date for the civil service. He set Friday 14 August as a day off for the whole administration. Consequently many people will enjoy a Friday-to-Sunday break.

Which public offices will close on 14 August?

The directive covers the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, ministries, and central government offices. Moreover provincial offices (voivodeship offices) will close. The National Tax Information (Krajowa Informacja Skarbowa) and tax administration chambers will stop routine work. In addition many central government agencies will shut. However some local municipal offices may choose a different day. Therefore check the specific institution before a planned visit. Also remember courts and emergency services follow separate rules. If you must visit ZUS (social insurance office), NFZ (public health payer), or a registry like PESEL, confirm opening hours in advance.

What the private sector must do and what it means for you

Every employer must compensate employees for the holiday that fell on Saturday. However private employers can schedule that day at any time during the settlement period. Many companies choose the same Friday for convenience. Conversely some firms stack such compensatory days into quieter seasons, for example between Christmas and New Year. Therefore do not assume you have the day off without checking. Ask HR early. Also file holiday requests quickly. Moreover some employers will pay you normally, while others will require you to take annual leave.

Plan official errands with care. Consequently avoid scheduling a tax office visit or a driving licence appointment on 14 August. In addition book private appointments early. Many banks and local offices will not operate.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live in Poland as an expat, check how public services work on holidays. ZUS handles pensions and social security. NFZ runs public healthcare funding. PESEL is the national ID number for residents. A “mandat” means a fine from police or municipal officers. Consequently many pharmacies operate on a duty rota (aptek dyżurujących) and public transport may use a holiday timetable. Therefore confirm opening hours and emergency contacts with your local city hall (urząd miasta) before the long weekend.

For practical steps, ask your HR department now. Moreover request the date in writing if your employer confirms it. Also check local government websites for specific closures. Finally enjoy the extended weekend responsibly.
