5-year-old hurt on stairwell in Częstochowa

A 5-year-old with broken leg called for help on a stairwell in Częstochowa; police found intoxicated parents and the child later underwent surgery.

A 5-year-old with broken leg cried for help late at night in a block of flats in Częstochowa. Neighbours raised the alarm, and police officers rushed in to secure the scene and get medical help.

Night rescue and police response

Police received the call at about 01:45 on Sunday. Consequently, officers arrived quickly and found a small boy on the stairwell. Moreover, he had an obvious leg injury and he cried for help. Therefore, medics transported the child to hospital immediately. Doctors decided to operate and the child underwent surgery.

Details: 5-year-old with broken leg

Officers established that the boy left his flat while his caregivers slept. However, the situation proved far more serious inside the home. The police found a 34-year-old mother, her partner and two other children aged four and eleven. Consequently, tests showed the mother had nearly 2.0 per mille of alcohol in her blood. Moreover, her partner registered about 1.0 per mille. Therefore, police detained both adults at the scene.

Charges and child welfare steps

After the adults sobered up, investigators questioned them. The mother faces a charge of exposing a child to danger of loss of life or grievous bodily harm. As a result, she could face up to five years in prison if convicted. In addition, the incident triggered notifications to the family and juvenile court. Consequently, local child protection authorities placed the other two children into a care facility while the legal process unfolds.

Police operate under Polish criminal code provisions that penalise neglect and endangerment of minors. Moreover, family courts (sąd rodzinny i nieletnich) handle custody and protection decisions. Therefore, the court can order temporary foster placements or social supervision. In practice, a municipality social services unit, often called MOPS or PCPR, coordinates immediate care. Also, local prosecutors typically decide whether to seek pre-trial measures against adults.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: In Poland call 112 for any emergency. Consequently, ambulance care for residents usually goes through the National Health Fund (NFZ). If you live or work here, register for NFZ coverage or bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if you are an EU citizen. Moreover, non-residents may face bills for emergency care, so keep private travel insurance. Therefore, social services and the family court step in when police report child neglect. Also, keep local contact details for municipal social services (MOPS) and the police station handy.

This case highlights broader risks for families in shared blocks. Neighbours who hear a child crying acted decisively. Consequently, their call likely prevented further harm. However, the incident also raises questions about support networks and alcohol misuse. In addition, it shows how quickly authorities can remove children to protect them. Therefore, expats should note how local agencies work together in such emergencies.
