A 36-year-old woman was stopped by a concerned motorist in the Trawniki municipality after driving erratically. The drunk driver arrested had nearly 3.8 per mille of alcohol in her blood, according to police.

Local police say a witness noticed a car moving in an unstable way. He stopped the vehicle and called the authorities. The driver did not leave the car. While waiting for a patrol she fell asleep in the seat. Officers woke her and tested her with a breathalyser. The result was nearly 3.8 per mille.

What the police found and said

Aspirant sztabowy Elwira Domaradzka of the Świdnica police told reporters the woman admitted drinking vodka and said she was on her way to a friend’s house. Police officers found a visible, partly opened bottle of alcohol inside the car. They secured the vehicle and took statements from the witness, who had acted to prevent a possible crash.

Why this matters beyond the scene

Driving under the influence poses a clear public risk. Alcohol reduces concentration, skews judgement, and slows reaction time. A single intervention by a passerby can stop a serious road collision. In Poland, as elsewhere, the immediate role of a witness often proves crucial in preventing harm.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you see a suspected drunk driver in Poland, call the police. The emergency number is available on official channels. Police will usually check sobriety with a breathalyser and may secure the vehicle. You may hear the word “mandat” — that means a fine. For legal details and procedures, check the official government portal or consult a local lawyer. Carrying valid ID helps if officers ask for identification.

For expats, a few practical points matter. First, police ranks and titles can look unfamiliar, but officers follow standard procedures when they suspect intoxicated driving. Second, carrying an ID or passport while driving speeds any checks. Third, a witness who stops a driver can change the outcome for others on the road. Acting safely means staying at a distance and calling the police rather than confronting an individual aggressively.

Authorities highlighted the behaviour of the witness as key. Without his call, the situation could have ended differently. Police urged people not to ignore signs of impaired driving and to report them safely to the authorities. The case remains a reminder of how much small actions influence public safety.
