Will Expensive Fuel Push Store Prices Up?

Rising fuel prices push up transport costs and already lift CPI. Learn why this matters for expats in Poland and what to expect.

Expensive petrol at the pumps already affects more than drivers, and rising fuel prices appear in more receipts. Consequently, consumers across Poland may pay more soon.

How fuel feeds the whole supply chain

Fuel powers trucks, tractors, and forklifts. Therefore higher pump prices raise costs for farms and wholesalers. Moreover logistics firms pass some costs to retailers. In turn shops adjust shelf prices to protect margins. However food prices can lag. For now fruit and vegetables fell in price. Yet economists warn this trend may reverse when transport costs stick higher.

Data shows the effect now

Statistics show a clear link between petrol and inflation. In July 2026 CPI rose to 3.0 percent year on year. In August it rose again to 3.4 percent. Meanwhile fuel costs jumped 24.2 percent year on year in August. Consequently the transport category spiked as well. Therefore passengers saw a big rise in airfares in July. Moreover spikes in fuel feed directly into sectors such as delivery and tourism. Thus the country already feels the impact.

rising fuel prices: why this happened and how long it may last

Poland faced two main causes. First, a government support scheme ended. Consequently the full 23 percent VAT on fuel returned. That change pushed prices up about 0.70 PLN per litre at once. Second, global oil rose on geopolitical tensions. Moreover Brent moved from near 72 to 90-100 dollars per barrel. Therefore many analysts expect higher inflation to persist. Credit Agricole raised its inflation forecast for 2026 and 2027. However PKO BP still expects inflation to fall if oil stabilises later. In short, the outcome depends on foreign events and markets far from Poland.

Who will feel the pain and where

Transport affects many goods. For example farming uses diesel for fieldwork. In addition cold storage and wholesale logistics require energy. Therefore supermarkets may face rising input costs. Moreover coffee and processed foods could show bigger price jumps. Some models even show large rises for selected goods in pessimistic scenarios. However the timing will vary by product and season. Thus shoppers may notice gradual changes rather than an immediate shock.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live in Poland, track your household budget. Moreover learn basic Polish tax and public terms. ZUS is the social security office. NFZ runs public health insurance. PESEL is your national ID number. A “mandat” means a fine from police. In addition check receipts for VAT, since VAT changes affect many prices. Finally, sign up for bank alerts to catch sudden bill increases.

For expats planning budgets, the timing matters. Consequently a stable oil market would ease pressure. However a prolonged price rise will push many shop prices higher. In addition policy choices in Warsaw can cushion or amplify changes. Therefore watch both local fiscal moves and global events.
