Thousands of Piglets Killed in Large Barn Fire

A pig farm fire near Lutol Suchy killed about 2,150 animals. Emergency crews still battle the blaze. Learn what this means for expats.

On Thursday 28 May a pig farm fire broke out near the village of Lutol Suchy in Żary county. Consequently the blaze killed about 150 sows and roughly 2,000 piglets, while crews still battle hot spots and smoke.

Details of the pig farm fire and emergency response

The alarm reached services at 13:51. Moreover the blaze affected one of ten neighbouring production halls. The hall measured about 2,500 square metres. Therefore crews found several hundred breeding sows and several thousand piglets inside. However teams rescued many animals. Firefighters saved roughly 350 sows and about 2,000 piglets. In addition rescue teams reported no human injuries. Meanwhile 20 units of the State Fire Service (PSP) and Volunteer Fire Brigades (OSP) work on site. They fought flames and protected neighbouring halls. Consequently they attacked the fire on two fronts. First they extinguished flames. Second they led animals out. The operation may take many more hours. As a result the farm faces heavy losses and long recovery time.

Investigation, risk factors and local context

Authorities have not yet determined the cause. Therefore police, the prosecutor and a court fire expert will inspect the scene. The expert will examine the fire origin and wiring. Moreover investigators will check for traces of accelerants. In addition they will test electrical installations. The fire occurred on a day with the highest regional fire risk. Consequently the Regional Directorate of State Forests had declared level III danger. As a result dry weather and earlier drought may have increased ignition risk. Furthermore large farms face special hazards. They store dry bedding and straw. They run heavy ventilation and heating systems. Therefore electrical faults can spark fires. In addition dense animal housing makes evacuation very hard. The owner will likely report large financial loss. Moreover loss of breeding sows interrupts production for months. Estimates put the damage in the hundreds of thousands of zloty. Finally insurers and public aid will determine compensation possibilities. However farmers often rely first on private insurance. In Poland some support may come from government or EU emergency measures.
