Lublin road safety improved this summer, yet 17 people died and 216 were injured across the region.

Summer on Lublin roads was safer than last year, yet 17 people did not return home. Lublin road safety improved compared to the previous season, but tragedies still occurred.

Lublin road safety: summer statistics

The regional police recorded 185 road accidents during the holiday period. Moreover, 17 people died and 216 suffered injuries. In addition, children featured among the victims. Specifically, police counted 14 crashes involving children. However, one child died and 15 children suffered injuries. For comparison, police registered 23 child-related accidents last summer, with one fatality and 20 injured children.

Drunk driving, speeding and enforcement

Police tested the sobriety of nearly 250,000 drivers. Consequently, officers found 1,600 motorists under the influence of alcohol. Moreover, drunk drivers caused ten accidents. Therefore, these crashes injured 11 people. Also, officers suspended more than 1,000 driving licences during the season. Furthermore, over 400 licences fell for drivers who exceeded speed limits by more than 50 km/h in built-up areas. In Poland, a “mandat” means a fine issued on the spot. Moreover, police can temporarily confiscate your licence in serious cases.

Water safety and patrols

Tragically, nine people drowned in lakes and rivers across the region. The victims ranged from 22 to 71 years old. However, none of the victims were children. Compared to last year, this figure rose from seven drownings. Police list alcohol, bravado and lack of caution as the usual causes. Consequently, authorities placed extra officers on duty near water. Specifically, they assigned 34 full-time water police and 14 temporary officers. In addition, officers used 11 boats to patrol key spots such as Lake Biale, the Nielisz reservoir and the Zemborzycki Reservoir. Also, 26 officers patrolled by bicycle to boost local visibility.

Safe camps and school run preparations

Police also inspected children’s summer camps. In total, the region hosted 40 scout camps with almost 2,800 participants. Fortunately, officers reported no major incidents at these camps. However, poor weather forced some relocations. Moreover, police ran over 70 preventive sessions with youngsters. In addition, they checked buses. Consequently, officers inspected more than 240 buses. Therefore, three vehicles failed their checks and could not continue trips.

From now on, police will run the “Safe Road to School” campaign. Accordingly, officers already reviewed road markings near schools and preschools. Specifically, they checked close to 800 locations. In addition, police sent more than 70 requests to road managers to fix problems. From September 1, authorities will increase patrols near schools. They will also check child transport and parking behavior. The action will run until the end of September.
