Stawki track collapse halts trams for days

Stawki tramway track collapse forces tram suspensions and diversions in Warsaw. Repairs will take at least two days.

The Stawki tramway track collapse on a 34-year-old section forced Warsaw authorities to close one track. Consequently, tram traffic stopped in one direction and authorities now plan a two-day repair window.

What happened and why it matters

On Sunday evening maintenance crews found a large concrete slab had dropped. Moreover, the slab created a pronounced depression that prevented trams from passing safely. In addition, crews closed the southern track between Pokorna and Dubois immediately. Therefore, service on Stawki slowed and operators rerouted several lines.

Stawki tramway track collapse: immediate effects

Tram operator Tramwaje Warszawskie announced a temporary closure. However, they will work night and day to restore traffic. Consequently, from Monday July 27 service will stop in both directions for about two days. Moreover, previous subsidence happened weeks earlier near Karmelicka and Dzika. As a result, operators expect similar repair timeframes now. Meanwhile, heavy rain last week likely accelerated the failure. In addition, builders originally neglected adequate drainage when they laid the tracks. Therefore, the aged infrastructure no longer copes with intense weather.

Impact on routes and passengers

Line 76 faces the biggest disruption. Consequently, the line now runs via Al. Jana Pawła II, Słomińskiego and Jagiellońska to Ratuszowa-ZOO. Moreover, some stops temporarily closed, including Marymont-Potok, Bohomolca and Pl. Wilsona platforms. In addition, authorities recommend using bus line 157 between Stawki and Marymont-Potok segments. Therefore, passengers must check the ZTM app for updates and replacement routes.

Tram crews reported they will perform an emergency patch. However, they warn that repairs will take at least two full days of continuous work. Moreover, crews repaired a nearby collapse in two and a half days earlier. In addition, Warsaw plans a comprehensive renovation of the entire Stawki corridor in 2028. Therefore, officials will schedule preventive week-long closures this autumn to patch vulnerable sections.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you rely on trams, prepare indirect routes. Moreover, buy single tickets or use the ZTM mobile app. In addition, carry ID when inspectors check fares. For claims or reporting damage you might need a PESEL or document number. Also, remember Polish institutions like ZUS (social insurance) and NFZ (public health) manage different services. Therefore, keep receipts for travel disruptions if you plan to seek compensation. Finally, many expat services and community Facebook groups post live updates.

Local residents apologised for noise during night repairs. However, crews insisted they must work continuously to shorten the closure. Moreover, the operator confirmed crews from the Traction and Tracks Department will perform the work. Therefore, expect night work and occasional traffic noise near Stawki.

For the foreigner living in Warsaw this event shows the city’s challenge with ageing transport assets. Moreover, unpredictable weather can expose design flaws. Therefore, check alternate routes and leave extra travel time during repairs. In addition, learn where to find ZTM updates and replacement buses.
